Visit Xiamen

by graphics1976

Took un-planned trip to Xiamen. From Zhuhai bought ticket to Fujian, they didn’t have flights to Fuzhou, but Xiamen have, so I took that. (good thing, because I read some webpage now that Fuzhou is just some industrial city with nothing to see.). There was 1 flight to Xiamen on evening and the travel office had airport bus leaving in 10 minutes so didn’t had to wait. There was 1 women going to Xiamen same flight also. Bus came and took 45 minutes to Zhuhai International Airport. Walked straight to the security checkup after buying the airport tax fee ticket (50RMB). I didn’t had any baggage as it was only 2 days trip, so I skipped the baggage checkup lines, but then at security checkup they say I need to go there to get my boarding pass from there anyway. So went back to pickup boarding pass. Walking towards the gate there was just few shops there, and the airport looked quite empty. Someone from the shops was driving a radio control car on the hallways.

Went to sit on the waiting hall. Few more people come there to wait. Some guy sit there, and said Hello. Chat for a while there, He’s from Xinjiang province, now works and lives in Xiamen. Could speak couple words Swedish even. Had a Xiamen map and China map on his bag so he gave me some tips for places to visit in China and in Xiamen, and said
Can help me to find hotel, since I didn’t had anything booked. Also Said that should go Beijing, then Shanghai and the cities around there, Hangzhou, Suzhou. And 3rd, Xinjiang, to go there by train, and see the Gobi desert.

Get on the plane, was many empty seats, but already dark outside so probably no good views. After plane got up, there was beautiful view to Zhuhai city lights!

After arrive to Xiamen airport, we took taxi to his apartment house, as the hotel was next to the apartment. On the way he explain how Xiamen is much safer city, and even the taxis have a system to report lost items(if you forget handphone on taxi, you can get it back no problem). Arrived to the hotel, and he helped me to book the hotel and then we went to visit his home on next door building. Had late dinner there as his mum was waiting and had cooked some dumplings. (So had my Christmas dinner.)

Then I went to sleep on hotel. In morning around 9am get up and started walking towards the sea side.(He gave me the Xiamen map), Streets were quite empty and traffic was quiet. After walking around enough, got into the port, which had ferry to Gulanyu island.
Took the ferry there and started walking around the island. Really quiet and peaceful there, since there are no cars/motorbikes, just electric golf cars to carry people around the island. Walked on the seaside and took photos of the beach and beautiful clear sea.
Went to see the big statue, not sure what was its name, I remember the trashcans there were really cute :D (animal shapes), and every turn and step had a warning signs, slipper, falling danger etc. Kept on walking, and there was actually a town there, with lots of shops and mcdonalds of course. Was walking down the shop stairs and 3 women were taking photos there, I heard one of them said ‘look American’ in Chinese, I said ‘not American but Finnish’. Then they ask me to pose for a photo with them - hah.
Continued to walk, walked through the small streets between the housing area, some street band was playing Wubai’s songs(Taiwanese singer), kept going, and starting to get less people there, not many people walked all the way around the island.

Behind the island some dock workers were unloading a ship, using wheelbarrows the workers actually run and carry the heavy sacks somewhere. Saw some old bunkers from the war times (read short history: http://www.chinatour.com/attraction/xiamen.htm)
Interesting thing was that the streetside park lamps were solar power operated.

Got around the island and went to wait for the next ferry boat, some other waiting there also, watching a man fishing from the pier. (catched only 1 fish while I was waiting)
Boat arrived, went to sit on the open side of the boat, others went to sit inside, maybe too cold wind. One business man look alike came to sit outside also, Said Hello and asked where I’m from. Chat there for a while then arrive Xiamen city. Started walking on the seaside, many people sitting there, saw a xiamen airlines office so bought a ticket to Guangzhou, as I didn’t buy return ticket from Zhuhai (as I wasn’t sure where I would go:)

Was getting bit outside of the city, many older houses, arrived to some University place,
Stopped there waiting for a bus (had walked about half way Xiamen island already and the Gulanyu island also) took some bus and went as far as the bus go, it went through the city and stopped on some bus station. Started walking in one direction again, passed by the yuandang lake again (really cold wind there), kept on walking until was again on the old buildings place I had just walked before take the bus! Walked bit more to arrive the university place and took same bus again but leave off halfway somewhere. Visited Zhongshan park, and walked around the main shopping streets. Ended up back to near the ferry station, turn back and took a smaller road, which had also old buildings and many shops on the streets, full of people. Looked just like going to the main shopping street but maybe 40 years earlier :), people selling fish, fruits, and all kind of stuff. Crowded there, some old man carrying big bag said hello and asked do I like China. (yes), Kept walking around the city and came to the Wanshi garden, but was getting bit darker already, so didn’t go there, turn back and buy some doujiang and mianbao on the way, soya milk cup machine was broken so waited a while, then went to have lunch, or dinner on a bench under one big tree. Was watching old man trying to stop a taxi like 10 minutes, he was on wrong side of the road as couldn’t walk properly because of injured leg, so all the taxis just drive by.

Continued walking, and went to look for a hotel, took a taxi and asked for a hotel,
Took me to some post office hotel(?), booked room there for 1 night and rest for a 10 minutes, then go back to walking :). Walked around the main streets, and planned to towards the big bridge which should look with the lights. Was quite far, and never get there, there was some big car roads going up the bridge, but I didn’t see anyway to walk there. So kept going until came back to the 1st hotel I had been staying. Took another road back and arrived to the mainstreets, starting to get late already so started walking back to the hotel, and founded it after a while. Go sleep and in morning wake up on some
Machine noises from the neighbour building. Sign out, and continue walking around as my flight was in the afternoon.(5pm), around 2-3pm was already getting closer to the airport but then took taxi to airport. Sit there for a shortwhile and took flight to Guangzhou, Heavy cold rain there, didn’t have umbrella, but kept on walking until cold enough and all wet, then took taxi to bus station, and bus to Zhuhai.
