We are thinking of visiting Xiamen this coming October, where my wife's ancestors hailed from. How's the weather like at this time of the year? Can any locals or regulars let us know whether this is a good place for a family holiday (with kids)?
What are the must do's in Xiamen and and good and reasonably priced hotel here?

October weather should be excellent. Xiamen is actually interesting for a day or two. There is Hulangyu island - you can a take a regular boat (day or night) across to this old European style building with no cars. There is also very famous Chinese temple. There is a long beach coastline where locals like to eat seafood. If you eat local, it is cheap. But most of us rather eat at hotels and restaurants for hygiene concerns. Interesting street shops are like old Penang Road. Marco Polo Hotel is quite a pricey but nice place for family. In China, there is a big difference between 3-4 star and 5 star. Worth paying a bit more for luxury than suffer.

Just don't be in China during the 1st week of October, as it'll be very crowded everywhere, and transport and accommodation will be much more expensive, even if available. That's the National Day holiday week.
Definately take a trip to Gulangyu Island. It is so pretty to walk around, and the European architecture is do different from most places in China. There's a tall building right across from where you catch the ferry that has a Pizza Hut on the 26th floor. Not only is the food there decent, and the ice safe to drink (got an ice tea, which I'd been craving!), but the view of the harbor and the Island is wonderful.
Xiamen is realy a good place for a family holiday. The city is quite clean and beautiful. You could enjoy the air, the sun and the sea. It's still little hot and the temperature is about 30-35c in October. But it's quite good for swimming.
Gulangyu is a famouse natural scenic spot of China. You must be there for one day's tour. It's a small island with many old and beautiful westen architectures. And it is also called island of music. Because it born many famouse musicians.
Nanputuo Temple is a famouse temple with a long history. If you are interesting in Buddhism, you should be there have a look.
And the hotel here is not every expensive. As a 3 star hotel, the standand room for two people is about 400 RMB one night.

BTW, try Nite Lily Guesthouse (http://www.nitelily.todayinchina.com) for a good mid-range place to stay in Xiamen.
At Gulangyu, time seems to stop. You can see children in school at play - with traditional local games.
Compared with the standard video games, now also prevalent all over China, it is a nice change to watch simple games that do not require any electronic monitor or expensive sports equipment.
Bring back fond memories of childhood games.
Located just minutes off the coast from Xiamen, this island enjoys legendary status with locals and visitors (Dick Nixon lodged here in 1972). Despite its small size, its narrow cobblestone streets are crammed with colonial-style buildings fronted by large terraced patios lending it an almost Bavarian look. Automobiles are banned from the island creating a calm, park-like atmosphere. Sunlight Rock and Koxinga Memorial Hall are two of its more popular attractions.
Xiaman is my mother town, I was born there and moved to Hong Kong when I was 6. I used to go back to Xiaman every couple of years when I was little, but I actually haven't been there for almost 10 years. However, I think I might be going back in these 2 years, and will definitely show you how beautiful my mother town is~
