I would appreciate if someone could provide me with information on train from xiamen to shanghai (cost and travelling time and schedule) and also any cheap accommodation, hostel for backpacker.
Actually, the train travel time for Xiamen -- Shanghai has been reduced drastically with the new D trains.
Xiamen -- Shanghai South:
D3204 (1110--1905) 7h55min

Fare is 358/429 RMB for 2nd/1st-class seats.
For hostels, if you Google for "Shanghai hostel" you'll turn up a lot of results. Hiker IYH and Etour IYH are the most centrally located; stay clear of Captain's Hostel.
This is the summit of Gulangyu Island, made up of huge granite slabs but with a walking path and handrails. The elevation is about 100 meters so it's a relatively easy walk. The views on top are superb. You can view the Xiamen skyling to the west and the Quemoy (Jinmen) island to the east, occupied by the Taiwanese. The sea between Xiamen (Amoy) and Quemoy had seen much artillary shelling during the cold war.
I moved to Xiamen in February with my boyfriend to study Mandarin. We have both enrolled in the Overseas Education College Program at Xiamen University. While we struggled a little with all of the local rules and regulations related to moving here and establishing a residence, we have settled in quite nicely and are well into our first term at the university.
