The same home-stays that offer food are, rather obviously, the same places that offer accommodation for around RMB20-30 per person full board (three meals). The accommodation is in late Qing courtyard houses, restored to one degree or another. Most have a kang bed, which is huge and everyone sleeps on the same bed. Note that in winter you need to give half-a-day’s notice, because they will need to heat up the kang. This is done by putting hot coals underneath – many houses still have the external hypocaust system which allows the coal to be shovelled in from outside.
Note that the washing and toilet facilities vary considerably. Some use modern equipment, but it is still basic; others rely on long-drop toilets and hot water provided in a bowl. It’s your choice – “real” rural China or “almost real” rural China.
