Tianma Hotel

An excellent 3-star hotel (RMB240 per night) and excellent value. In a good location close to the old city, but it is on a busy road junction. The hotel is a gem despite some (forgiveable) shortcomings. Room is fresh, bright and clean. Basic air controls. Kettle, tea, coffee (but no spoons or milk or sugar).
Local TV coverage in room. I could stay here for many days.
No minibar but attendant bought bottled water for me in 5 minutes.
The bathroom was poor and had broken tiles, and looked grim but had the usual shampoo, comb, shower cap stuff. Hot water was fine. Towels were 'tired' and had seen many a body!
Restaurant was cavernous and cold in the evening. Chinese breakfast buffet only.
Tiny, empty cubby hole bar (good bar 250m south down the street).
ONLY Chinese spoken.

The latest Rough Guide calls this hotel "dull": this is unfair. The food and accommodation are very good for a 3 star hotel. It's unpretentious, but what do you expect for this price?
Safety was fine.

Unique Quality: The floor attendant brought hot tea after I arrived.
Karaoke, massage, travel service in separate annexe.
Excellent huge shop with many good souvenirs, but no English books.
Parking out front.
