Is a day trip to Guangzhou from Hong Kong worthwhile?

by Lad_uk

Hi,

I'm considering the possibility of taking a day trip to Guangzhou from Hong Kong but was wondering if it is worthwhile doing as I've only got one full day to explore the city and see the sights. I could take an early train which will give me an extra half day but I would lose that time in HK. I've also got the hassle of carrying luggage. The plan will then to go on to Guilin and Yangshou from Guangzhou.

If I didn't go to Guangzhou, I would take the overnight train from Shenzhen to Guilin but have more time in HK.

Bearing in mind that I've been to HK before, would it be a good idea to see Guangzhou especially as I would already have a Visa to visit China anyway? Is the city a worthwhile diversion from HK and do-able in one day? Or does it deserve more time to get a better appreciation?

Thanks

Yes, Guangzhou is a big city but different from Hong Kong. White Swan Hotel and Shamian along the Pearl River is nice place to visit and there is an international hostel in that area. Go to the pedestrian mall of Beijing Lu too. Guangzhou (Canton) is an old and yet modern city with a Muslim sector and many public gardens worth going to see how the locals relax, boating or practising taichi, etc. Guangzhou, my humble opinion, is a worthwhile diversion for a day trip or an overnight.

Go for it! Guangzhou's a great city and an entirely different experience from Hong Kong. You can at least get a worthwhile taste in one day.

Guangzhou is going to hold the Asian Games in Nov. this year,it's worthy to visit!!!...The new TV Tower which is new landmark of Canton http://www.lifeofguangzhou.com/node_10/node_37/node_85/2010/02/24/126697532274398.shtml, Pearl River at night...

Thank you all for your replies. I think I'll go for it! I only have one day but it seems that I can get a good experience.

I didn't realise that it is hosting the Asian games and explains why so many hotels are booked up already.

Well,it depends on when will you come, what kind of room you want to book.Rooms are almost booked up during the Canton Fair--http://www.cantonfair.org.cn/en/index.asp,and they are much more expensive than usual.I think it's not worthy for visitors.

rainbow-connection - I'm planning to go in November and started to look at hotels but a lot were fully booked. I thought it was the Canton Fair but found that it was earlier in the year and couldn't figure out what was so special about November until you mentioned it. Then it made sense!

oh...I forgot to mention that Canton Fair holds two times a year. One is during April and May,another is from Oct.15 to Nov.4. Besides,Asian Games will be held from November 12, 2010 to November 27, 2010. I think that's why the rooms are almost full in Nov. Maybe it's better during Nov.4-12.

Ahh, then its the second Canton Fair that's the cause. I'm hoping to be in Guangzhou at the beginning of November. I better start looking into booking my hotel now. Just as well I had the early warning otherwise I would have left booking my hotel later on in the year ;-)

If you're not doing business/shopping nor visiting friends/relatives, 1 day would be ok for a quick overview of Guangzhou. :)
I think my top recommendations would be Chen Clan Academy (Chen Jia Ci), Shamian Island plus a good meal of Cantonese dimsum, or Cantonese cuisine. If you're interested in oddities for sale (and aren't an animal rights activist) you could try Qingping Market; if you're interested in archaeology/history I would recommend Tomb of the Nanyue Kingdom.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Whampoa Military Academy :...

by ErnieGal

Whampoa Military Academy : The academy officially opened on June 16, 1924, during the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China. It was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, with the help of the Communist Party of China and former Soviet Union, to train military officers. Situated on the Changzhou Island of Huangpu (Whampoa), hence the name.

Motorbike Taxi

by Sobe-A-Rush

They are all over Guangzhou. You see them on every corner almost. Much cheaper than taxi, even faster when the traffic is really bad. They will try and rip you off so check with a chinese person as in how much should a trip be. Sometimes they will change the price when you get to wherever you are going and make a scene for a couple minutes, but just walk away after you pay and no problems.

A somber irony.

On the same day, I met this poor little boy in the same road... He was sleeping at that time, peacefully, in a deep sleep... There was a bowl nearby him for begging... and on the wall advertisement on the building, it said "The cradle for developing wealth"...
