Transportation from Kowloon (Hong Kong) to Guangzhou

by acrickmay

Hi
I will be staying at the Salisbury YMCA in Kowloon for 4 days in October, then I need to get to Guangzhou. Not sure if I should take the train or bus. How important is it to have ticket in advance? Do I risk not getting to GZ if I wait until the day I need to buy a ticket? Anyone know if Train or Bus is the best way to get from Kowloon to GZ? Where do I catch the bus? Is a bus or train easier at the border?
Any info is appreciated
Thanks!
Andrew

Train is the best choice in my humble opinion. You get on in Hong Kong and get off in Guangzhou. You can buy the tickets just before travel at the train station with no problem getting onboard on most days. This is the way I went in the past and will go again in September.

The only other way I would go is ferry. I think I would enjoy a trip up the Pearl riverin a high speed ferry. I don't know much about this choice, though.

Train for sure, nice ride and gets you there in 1 1/2 hours, here's the link to the train schedule

http://www.it3.mtr.com.hk/B2C/UserPage/sysTimeTable_Eng.asp, try to take the

KTT trains as they are newer and much more comfortable. The Y is close to the train station, about a HK$20 ride.

Enjoy

Definitely the train. Faster, less hassle and you're a short taxi ride (or one stop away on the KCR) from the train station anyway.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Unbelievalbe humidity...

by gypsyqueen

Bring only breathable fabrics. Humidity is so intense, you don't want sweat more than what you are already. I wore only 100% cotton everything. Clothes are cheap and most is for the the climate of China, but their sizes are very, SMALL, so bring your own shorts, etc., unless you are tiny. You will ruin your shoes with all the rain, buy them there, they are very cheap and you can get everything! If you are hiking bring your own hiking boots, nothing beats comfort & these are not easy to find. I did not see any for sale! I took over 1 good comfortable walking shoes that I was ready to part with incase of rain and went through 2 pairs of runners, 4 pairs of flip flops that I purchased there. My own reliable shoes I wore over came back home for garden use only.

Beef balls

by simcard about a restaurant opposite the Art college

My friend took me to this restaurant which is opposite the art college. They serve almost all kinds of Cantonese food. I love this rice noodle the best. You can order beef balls, fish balls or pork balls too. There I ordered fish and beef balls. They taste wonderful! And it is very cheap too. Such a portion only cost me 6 yuan.

Yuexiu Gongyuan.

by Guantanamera

Yuexiu Gongyuan is a humungous public park of 93 hectares (whatever a hectare is) in north central Guangzhou... There is a tremendous amount of things to explore here including a big theme park based on "Journey to the West" with statues of the characters (including the Monkey King! Yeah! Monkey King!), a huge swimming pool, a giant obelisk monument to Sun Yatsen, and the famous Sculpture of the Five Celestial Rams... The park is so huge that there are many places that lovers can wander off to and find a quiet private spot to do the things that lovers do...!

The photo here shows Xiujuan having fun feeding pigeons at the park's pigeon center...
