English speaking driver and guide in the next day or two

by lashafer

I'm from Calgary, Canada here in Dongguan for a few days with my girl friend and she is busy visiting family. I would like to have/hire someone to show me around for a day and tell me about some of the history. I only speak English.
Thank you very much.

Sounds like you might be better off getting some information off the Internet and roaming on your own.
Dongguan is mainly an industrial place with not much history (I might be wrong). You might want to try Humen city (famous for wholesale clothes), a sub-city of Dongguan. It was there that Commissioner Lin Zexu burnt the load of opium confiscated from British merchant ships in the 19th century, and thus sparked off the Opium War. There's a memorial/museum there, as well as an old fort nearby.

Welcome to Guangdong from another Calgarian.
For someone who is not familiar with the area (and probably should not give advise as such), Dongguan takes up about 1/3 of Guangdong, and it is not easy to get around if you do not know exactly where and what township you are in. I can find you English driver out of Shenzhen here but they will be totally lost in Dongguan!

I will email you my telephone number for contact if I can be of help.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Dried snake skins

by l_joo

Dried snake skins, I have heard from 'aunties & uncles' that such materials are good for health, good for body, but it is disputed, some peoples think it is nonsense, but who cares, the responsibility of VTers is to upload photos and build tips, with or without facts is another issue.

Guangzhou Metro System Platforms.

by Guantanamera

This photo gives you an idea of what the Guangzhou Metro System platforms are like... As you can see, very modern, fairly orderly and lots of colorful backlit advertisements, including ads for American products such as KFC, McDonald's, and the Colgate toothpaste ad shown here... Unlike in most Western countries, there is almost always a security guard at each metro station platform to guard the place and assist people...

Newsstand

by xingfa

Newsstands are very commonplace around the bus stations in Guangzhou... Aha... I'll tell you a small secret... Every day I buy a newspaper or magazine in this newsstand!! But I am wondering why the owner of the newsstand doesn't ever give me a discount!!
