In and around Shenzhen

by soundchaseruk

I am coming to China late October for 16 days. My first week will be spent in Yangshou, Guilin and a little further north, but then, as I fly back to the UK from HK, I want to stay in the south and explore the area of Guangxi and Fujian in my final week (keeping a few days free for HK).

Can anyone advise me where to go ? I am curious to see the Hakka houses but the travel from Shenzhen to them seems difficult.

I am thinking if want to see the Hakka you can find a small town . more that place in the GUANGXI, and GUANGXI is good view . this is my idea ..coz i am chinese girl... have a nice trip ...

If you are just interested in seeing Hakka houses, there is no need for you to travel so far as to Guangxi and Fujian. Shenzhen is Guangdong province, which is between the two provinces you have mentioned. You can see Hakka houses just inside Guangdong province. That's in the city of Meizhou. It takes you only a few hours to get there from Shenzhen.

Welcome to China and have a nice trip:)

Well try a google search on Tulou and Fujian and you will find the right stuff your looking for about the rounded Hakka houses.
I planning to see these places in my coming trip thru China.
Report on this here. In short from Shenzhen you can take a train to Yongding and start looking for the Tulou (Hakka house) there. Working your self up north and east with busses you will see the greatest Tulous. At least thats what I am planning to do.

Rob when are you travelling to China?

This sounds a good idea. Do you live in these areas or is it an area you have travelled to ? If I didn't go to see the Hakka houses where else would you recommend ? I am travelling alone and want to see the real China and meet interesting local people.

Hi,
Busy doing the last work before leaving.
Well if you can see thru the bright sky (UK uuuugh)
maybe you can see the Ba flight to HK now.
The plan is to travel next week thru the south area all the way to Xiamen.
The Quanzhou area is also nice to visit.
Your plans are nice too, I've been to those places before.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Beijing Lu.

by Guantanamera

The north end of Beijing Lu, just below Gongyuan Qian Metro Station, has been transformed into an extensive pedestrian-only shopping arcade... Along the middle of the street, there is a fascinating permanent exhibition showing the excavated archeological layers of how the street looked throughout various dynasties, such as the Ming, the Qing, etc, leading up to modern times... There is a wide range of stores available, from a large modern-style department store to stores selling the latest fashions for young people, to the ultra-cheap shacks hawking t-shirts, jewelry and knick-knacks...

Night Cruise on the Pearl River

by jlee008

If there is anything that you can enjoy, it is a night cruise on the Pearl River. While it is not as interesting during the day, the many bridges that cross the river are lit by neon lights at night. There are several night cruises available. Some are just cruises and others provide tea and Chinese delicacies. I highly recommend any of them.

The particular one I took was selected by my relatives and was excellent. We had unfortunately had a very lovely dinner at one of the restaurants nearby before we cruised. We rode the cruise down to Shaiman Island before back tracking to the boat dock.

This is a view of the Pearl River from the 17th floor of the White Swan Hotel. Photo taken August, 2001.

I first visited Guangzhou (Canton) in 1993 as an extension to a business trip to Hong Kong. I took an "express" train from HK to Canton.

On the train I met a Coca-Cola marketing manager, he was very helpful. Also on the train was a chess team from France. One of the chess team member was obnoxious and rude. I thought about waving a white flag in his face.

In Guangzhou I met an uncle on my mom's side for the first time. He and his father are architects. They designed the first 5-Star hotel in China, The White Swan, and had two rooms at the hotel. I stayed in one for free.

The next time I visited Guangzhou was in August of 2001.
