personal guide?
by china_bound
Hi - I was wondering if there was any opportunity to get a guide in Guangzhou, I will be there for about 3 days total and i figure having a guide is a more efficient way of seeing the city. Any recommendations would be great.
Thanks
Jon

When I was in Nanjing, I was able to arrange for a personal travel guide the same morning from the 5 star hotel conceirge I was staying.
More expensive for English speaking guide. I had a Mandarin speaking guide. You can request male or female guide.
Have fun.

Any idea how much to set aside for the guide (per day)? Do we have to pay for his/her food and other misc items like transport etc or will they be providing a car as well?
Travel Tips for Guangzhou
Shop
by Willettsworld about Guangdong Museum of Folk Art
The Guangdong Museum of Folk Art has a few large shops where you can buy ivory, fans made from palm leafs and calligraphy paintings etc. I bought a copy of small calligraphy paintings even though I saw plenty of them on my long trip around China but they were a novelty here as Guangzhou was my first port of call in China.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
by joecooper
The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall was built in 1931 on the original site of Sun Yat-Sen's Presidential Office. The hall is surrounded by well kept lawns and gardens and there is a small museum (No English captions) behind the hall. The hall itself is quite grand but inside you won't find a great deal apart from seats as the hall is used for meetings and performances. In 1956, a bronze statue of Dr Sun was erected in front of the hall.
If you don't know who Sun Yat-Sen was, here is a bit about him: He was born on November 12, 1866 at Cuiheng Village of Guangdong province and was a leading figure in China's revolution against the Qing government and the first President of the Republic.
In August 1905, he formulated the Three Principles of the People - nationalism, democracy, and social well-being. He believed these to be the guidelines for building a modern China. There is a plaque in the hall with the words "The Whole World as a Community" which was inscribed by Sun Yat-sen himself.
It seems ironic that this is such a prominent building in the city when the Chinese government so blatently ignore the Dr’s words. I think we'd all be better off if we worked together a bit more.
Admission to the grounds is 10RMB, payable at the front gate.
The McCurrys visit Guangzhou
by McCurry
Guangzhou is my favorite large city in China. There are many parallels to New Orleans... large oak trees with spanish moss, a French "section" (on Shamian Island) and the best food in China. They say you go to "Beijing for politics, Shanghai for shopping and Guangzhou to eat". The city was cleaner than Beijing and Shanghai and almost every balcony had a little garden with plants...

Q: Shenzhen to Guangzhou "I am traveling with my family to Guangdong as a tourist. We ware staying for 5 days. We plan to enter Shenzhen, then to Guangzhou..."
A: "The best way is by train. Trains live with schedules. Trains have toilets. You can get up and walk around. You can get food on a train. I can't think of a better way..."
