Trains -- food and beer

by NYTim

On the overnight trains to Nanning do they sell food and alcoholic beverages or does one have to pack it for the journey?

Cheers

There is normally a dining car as well as a trolley selling dinner for around 15rmb.

I know they sell beer; I don't know about harder stuff.

It is quite usual to take instant noodles, as there is a water boiler in every carriage.

Also, where the trains has an extended stop at a station, it is quite common for there to be cooked food stalls lined up on the platform - time enough to get off, purchase, and rejoin the train

Incidentally, work started in Aug 2008 to build a new high-speed line GZ-NN which would reduce the journey time to 3 hours. But that won't be completed before about 2011.

Yes, they will. The trolley carts stop coming by after around 2200 or so though, and you won't be able to walk to the dining car, so get all you want before that.

Thanks guys for all your assistance, One more question -- is there a place to store my luggage in Guangzhou and Nanning as I have a few hours to kill in both places?

Cheers

GZ certainly has a left-luggage. I don't know about NN but I think all stations do.

Thanks once more for your kind replies.

Every train and long-distance bus station I've encountered in China has had at least 1 left-luggage facility. :)

I could not have planned this without you guys. How the heck did we do it before VT?

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Caligraphy

by herzog63

It seemed like on every other small street there was a guy like this doing some sort of of Caligraphy. I'm not really sure what he was writing but for me the written Chinese language is so beautiful that he could have written "I'm stupid" on it and it would be hanging in a frame on my living room wall right now!! haha I wish I would have had something made by one of these guys. At the time I didn't want to carry it with me as I thought it would get destroyed in my backpack.

Cantonese dessert

by simcard about almost everywhere

There are so many kinds of desserts. My favorite one is called "tortoise-tufuling" (the dark one in the pic). It smells fragant and tastes sweet, a little bitter and smooth. They said it can smoothen your skin, keep you young and give you long life if you eat it. Better hurry and get it in Guangzhou. :-)

Guangzhou Zoo

by keeweechic

Guangzhou Zoo is set on 430,000 square metres in area, it is the largest zoo in South China. More than 2,000 animals in 200 species are on exhibition in the zoo, including the giant panda (which is usually hiding), golden-haired monkey, red-crowned crane and other precious animals unique to China.
