RE: Traveling in Guangzhou

by Nailatourist

hi,
i was in Guangzhou last Xmas but i had a friend there so it was much easier to move around as it is a bit "hard" to move around on your own since hardly anyone speaks english. Taxi drivers don't and people in the streets Don't.

if you need help i suggest you try asking younger people, they might be students and learning english so easier to get directions.

we mainly moved by taxi and it was not expensive at all, something like 0.10 cents of a euro for one way. I do not know if there are day passes but being so cheap to travel it shouldnt be a problem .
We also used the taxi sometimes which are very cheap also, you can pay something like 1.5 euro for a 3 km ride.

from the aiport to the center i paid 10 euros by taxi. Attention because taxi drivers at the airport don't speak english either so practise a lot your pronuntiation or have the name of the hotel written it down in chinese and show it to the taxi driver or keep on asking drivers until u find one that speaks chinese.

hope this helps
enjoy Guangzhou.. not what i expected but still very interesting to see.

1) Well, it depends on what you're comparing it to.
2) There're pre-paid cards but how long are you there for? It might be easier to just buy single-trip tickets each time you want to take the metro. The metro would be my pick for travelling around Guangzhou with no knowledge of Chinese, but it obviously wouldn't be of much help if the places you're going to aren't anywhere near metro stops.

Best way to travel in Guangzhou for a foreigner - Definitely the Subway/Metro
And the airport express to get from the airport to the hotel. See the airport website as well as the one below.

- Taxi expensive? For short hauls no. For long hauls yes (traffic, tolls etc.)
- I do not recall a one day pass - but do carry coins for the fare machines. I think the most expensive trip is $6 rmb.
- Cheapest and best way to/from airport is the airport express buses and they do take all of your normal luggage. Beware of touts at airport. http://www.toandfromtheairport.com/guangdong.html has good bus info.
- Good to print off the names of the places you need to go in chinese.
- Find a guide for a day $25.00 usd? (200 rmb?) + lunch of course. Might be a fun experience. Many folks love to practice their english and in return You'll learn some mandarin.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Taojin Lu

by Guantanamera about Blue

Near the Garden Hotel and just behind the Guangzhou World Trade Center, you'll find Taojin Lu, a street that passes through a great shopping area for clothes, especially women's clothes... Shooting off from Taojin Lu, there are many small side streets, each of which has a share of small, independent fashion shops, with funky names, designs and clothes...! Definitely one of the best areas to shop if you're looking for unique items at reasonable prices... In this photo, a shop named "Blue"...

Huanghua Gang Commemorative Park

by xiquinho

Huanghua Gang Commemorative Park was constructed to commemorate the glorious contribution of 72 martyrs who died for the 1911 Revolution. At the gateway inscribed four Chinese characters "Hao Qi Chang Chun" by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, meaning "Eternal Noble Spirit". A 200-meter long paved way with evergreen cypress trees leads to the Martyrs' Tomb.

"Across The South China Sea"

Arrived in Guangzhou via Hovercraft from Hong Kong
Stayed at White Swan Hotel. The hotel seemed like a city inside a city. New & modern, but step out the door & within 2 blocks you was in the "old" China. Narrow streets & old buliding. Merchants selling their wares on the street.
Stayed one night & took a train to Wuhan the next morning
