Where to stay?

by Tanjavd

I will be traveling to Guangzhou soon and want to know which area in Guangzhou is safe to stay in? I am a single female traveller and want to be close to malls and restaurants where I can walk to at night.
Please advise

How much do you want to spend? We stayed in a Holiday Inn hotel right next to a major street filled with shops.. Have a look on my Guangzhou page for the hotel.

You can stay around the ShangXiaJiu street which is a pedestrain. There are lots of shops and you can walk around it and shopping.
It is in the center of the city. It would be okey for single female. Taking care of the valubale as thief exist in everywhere of the world.

I second that Holiday In was a good location and actually cheap by western standard. Just that there are two of them, so see that you select "shifu" hotel which is just by the restaurants and shopping district. I think the other one is more to the business district of the city.

Well, there is a very good hotel near Yuanjiang road. Kind of apartment. It is new and with a splendid view of the Zhujiang River. You can see the beautiful night piece of Guangzhou. It is brand new, it is very clean & new,and the price is below 200RMB if not during Guangdong Fair period.

PS:It is near some distribution centre/Mall. And close to Beijing road. The most famous walking street for shopping in Guangzhou.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Black Market

by herzog63

I'm not sure if there is a Black Market for hard currency any more but in 1987 there was a huge Black Market for FEC's (Foreign Exchange Certificates) (Which are not used anymore) and also US$. I was able to change my FEC's to the local currency of the Renminbi at a rate of 40% higher which made my trip quite cheap! I was approached anytime I got near a big hotel and also by quite a few of these guys that hung out on Shamian Island at a couple of key spots which is where my Youth Hostel was located. They were handy when I wanted to change money but a little annoying when I didn't want to.."Hello, Change Money" got a little old sometimes. But at the same time changing money on the "Black Market" added to the Romantism of traveling!! I know I have one or two FEC's somewhere but I can't find them this 1 Jiao note I have glued into my journal.

Guangzhou East Station: international trains to HK

by mke1963

The process is easier than it might look at first glance. Basically the international services requre you to keep going up escalators as far as you can go. The first escalator is at the eastern end of the station (turn right!), then keep going up. At the very top, if the Immigration people are not at their desks, you need to wait (there is a coffee shop and seats). Go through Immigration (remarkably efficient here) and then customs and you are into a waiting hall. Unless you have really heavy luggage, I would strongly, strongly recommend you do NOT use the escalator to go down to the platform when the gate is opened. The reason is that everyone else does, with all their luggage and it gets VERYcongested at the bottom. I felt very anxious watching as people got off the escaltor and couldn't or wouldn't move away..with a steady procession of people turning up behind them. This is potential a disaster waiting to happen. The train is waiting for you at the bottom and you need to get on the right carriage.

Sun Yat- Sen

by keeweechic

I can't remember what this was all about but it was in the Hall. There are however 2 plaques in the hall. One above the entrance of the door, which bears in gold the words "Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall" inscribed by Liao Chengzhi who was the vice chairman of the standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Another has the words "The Whole World as a Community" which was inscribed by Sun Yat-sen himself. This could be either one of these.
