Guangzhou 1 day & 1 night. Lone traveler - not backpacker

by mrPea

Catching train to Guangzhou (East Station) in late September from HKG. Will try & find hotel close to East Station. Traveling on my own.

I've traveled throughout S.America (my background is Chilean) & am familiar with HKG & Pacific area, but never been to mainland China.

Do not speak or understand a word of any Chinese dialects.

I would like to check out some museums/galleries & historical sites, and also do a bit of people watching and window shopping. My aim is to simply experience the hustle and bustle of the city life for 1 day & 1 night, take a few photos, have a few coffees, eat a couple of meals, & catch train back to HKG following day.

I am aware that the main train station attracts a few too many undesirables, so will avoid it. I will also simply wear a cheap watch, and no other jewelery.

Can someone confirm whether it is safe enough for an Aussie from Sydney with Latino complexion to walk around this big city in shorts & well worn t-shirt, with a medium-range digital camera snapping shots? Or should I invest in a few disposable cameras? How about my mobile?

Should I just stick to the main crowded streets, or is it ok to deviate & walk down the suburban streets?

Night time ok to walk around with camera?

Recommended modes of transport?
And what taxis to avoid...?

Any other small hints or suggestions please?
Has anyone used "Guangzhou Helper"?

Many thanks, p

Goodness, I would say exactly the opposite of the other poster right above.
No problem walking around in those clothes with your camera. Handphones should be kept in your pocket, not dangling in your hand.
Metro is one of the best ways to get around Guangzhou.
I would suggest staying around Beijing Lu/Haizhu Square/Shamian Island instead of Guangzhou East train station. That's more in the district of where you would be spending your time sightseeing.
For sightseeing, I would highly recommend that you check out Chen Jia Ci (Chen Clan Academy) and Tomb of the Nanyue Kingdom.

Thanks Ellyse!

Just what I wanted to hear. I'm not changing my plans and looking forward to experiencing GZ for what it is.

I'm actually considering extending my stay to 2 nights as well, and had also started leaning towards staying in Shamian Island instead of the area near Guangzhou East Station.

Thanks for your sightseeing recommendations. Just checked them out online and they are now on my list!

I've also just checked out the metro site...looks cool, and everything is also in English.

Thanks again Ellyse, greatly appreciated.

Haven't been to Guangzhou, but I have visited 7 other cities in China on multiple
business trips. (Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wuxi, Xian, Zhuzhou)

I have never had any problems personally, or witnessed any.
I'm Caucasian and have carried a mid-range camera often. I tend to wander
the main streets in the evenings all the time to people-watch.

Locals have told me that HKG is more likely to have pickpockets than Guangzhou (as you may know there are signs posted in some neighborhoods warning of this.)

I've read in several travel guides that the penalties for crime against foreigners in PRC are severe, and so most of the criminal element focuses on locals.

I don't know your gender, but if you are male you may be offered "massage"
in the evenings, or various other schemes to hook you up (e.g. "we have a private studio to sell artwork painted by local college students").
These would be good to avoid unless you go for that sort of thing.

For taxis, have someone write your destination in Chinese characters, or
get a tour book with the destination names in Chinese. Few taxi drivers
speak anything but the local language (Cantonese in Guangzhou).

Have a good time!

Guangdong Museum of Art Collection

The collection at the Guangdong Museum of Art includes a vast array of art works created by Guangdong province painters, sculptors, photographers and filmmakers, almost all of which have been produced during the last five years...! Temple Of The Six Banyan Trees

by joecooper

This working temple is very pretty and well maintained. It is right in the heart of the city, quite tucked away. You could walk right past it if it was not for the octagonal Hua Ta Pagoda towering 17 floors above! The pagoda was built in 1097 and shows only 9 floors on outside, making it very interesting to work your way up to the top.

The temple itself was built in 537 in the Liang dynasty during the Southern dynasties (386-581). When you think about what was being build in Europe at that time, you can really appreciate the ancient magnificance of the Chinese civilisation.

More recently, the Grand Hall was rebuilt in 1983 and houses three huge brass statues which were made in 1633. Have a look at my travelogue for more pictures and info on the temple.

Buy a ticket for the temple compound for 1RMB from the window to the left of the entrance. If you want to climb the pagoda, buy your ticket at the base for 10RMB.

Sister-city to Hong Kong

"Seems like a second home"

They speak Cantonese, and that's my mother tongue. they eat Cantoese food, and I grew up with that diet, so the place is like a home.
Worked here many times, since 1984. Came before the opening of China hotel (New World group) and even bought an apartment in 1995, with an ex-girlfriend. I think she still has the place.
