first time in Guangzhou

by tkdsimes

Hello.

I’ll be in Guangzhou in October for the Canton Fair. This will be my first time there, so I wonder if anyone can give me a few pointers.

1. Which area should I look for a hotel in? I’m looking for somewhere more or less in the vicinity of the main shopping/eating/nightlife area. I’m not too concerned about being close to the Fair venue. I’d be looking at 4 star.
2. Is Guangzhou a good place to buy green tea? Any particular place or area?
3. Which are the main bar areas? I mean bars rather than dance clubs.
4. Which are the main markets or shopping areas for gifts (stuff like teapots, calligraphied scrolls, etc)?

Thanks,

tkdsimes

1) Around Haizhu Square and Beijing Lu would be good for starters. Aim to be around a metro stop for convenience.

My husband attends the Canton fair every year in spring and autumn. He always stays at the Rosedale Hotel. They have shuttle bus to the complex and good shopping close by. Whereever you stay book very early and expect to pay very high prices!

Hello Rachel.

I've been to China several times on business and don't usually have language problems (there is usually someone in the company who speaks good English). However, I take note of your offer and will get in touch if I find I am going to need interpreting help.

Best regards,

Chimelong Paradise Amusement Park

by aussie_expat

If you want to see a different side to Guangzhou and China then head out to Chimelong Paradise Amusement Park. This is one of the biggest theme parks in China and is home to the 10 looped roller coast (mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest number of loops on a roller coaster). They also have the world's largest water stunt show with an international cast, China's largest 4D theatre, and a number of thrill seeking rides which are either the biggest in the world or in Asia for its ride design.

There is also China's largest indoor Children's entertainment area, which is good on those hot days and a number of rides where you will be guarranteed to get wet. There are both western and chinese restuarants at the park and plenty of live events and shows. This themepark is really up there with the top international themeparks and you will be very surprised that such a place exists in China (this is something they forgot to tell you in the tourist brochure!).

It really is a full day out, and provides plenty of activities for every member of the family. And is a good way to 'hang out with the locals'.

Right next door is the Chimelong International Circus, the world's largest permanent circus which performs each night from 7:30.

If you plan to go to both on the same day you can purchase a discounted package deal when you arrive at Chimelong Paradise.

The Mystic Stones

by luke007

You never believe that there are so mystic stones in the world if you have not been there. These stones are located in the DANXIA MOUNTAIN,Shaoguan city, north of the south China province Guangdong (Canton). When I went to the park and saw the sight, I understanded that there are many common characteristics between human and the nature. I can't defend if they belong to human or the nature when I faced these magic stones.I don't know what's your feeling when you have a look at that.Mybe you'll like them, maybe you are uncomfortable. The left picture's name is MALESTONE.
