I need a hotel beside the Canton Fair?

by Tennesseeguy30

Can someone help me rent a hotel room at the China hotel or DongFang hotel? I am afraid that when they answer the phones there at the hotels they are jacking up the prices because I'm American. I know that the prices are very high for the fair dates but I was hoping that my friends here on VT could pull some strings with the hotels or at least give me some advice. Thanks in advance and if anyone wants to meet and have lunch or hang out in Guangzhou on Oct 15-22 then post here. Later and Go Vols!!

RE: I need a hotel beside the Canton Fair?

this is common that hotel prices are double during the major fairs, this is the same even in Frankfurt,Germany. The 2 hotels u mentioned are opposite the Old fairground hence the prices will be hefty. For your information the new complex is at Pangzhou.Depending on the product u are looking for, better check on the website where they are located; old or new complex.
Holiday inn at Huanzhi Dong road is quite central n they have regular shuttle buses to take u and fetch u back from the fairground. However they will be charging approx yuan 2000 during the fare. u can check n book on their website http://www.ichotelsgroup.com
Another alternative is Hol INN at Sifu, much cheaper

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Xiujuan.

by Guantanamera

Xiujuan was constantly at my side during the 3 weeks or so that I traveled in Guangdong Province in the year 2003... Adorable, lovely, and heavenly, she is a native Guangdong girl whose name in Cantonese translates to "beautiful and sweet"... Jubilant and luminous, she added great zest and verve to my odyssey in China...

Subway or the badway

by aoiaraumi

The subway route is limited, but it gets you to most of the good areas. It is excellent if you want to get across town quickly. Running from the East Train Station to the Fancun Bus Station, it is very convenient if you need to get a bus in Guangdong or a train out.

Guangxiao Temple

by joecooper

Guangxiao Temple is a magnificant and ancient temple, built as the mansion for Prince Zhao Jiande of the Nanyue Kingdom during the Western Han Dynasty (206BC - 24AD). An Indian monk first built the temple during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 - 420). The Mahavira (Daxiong) Hall is the oldest structure in South China.

In 676 Huineng, one of the six founders of Chinese Buddhism had his head shaven in Guangxiao Temple and became a monk. Later monks of the temple built the a small pagoda to hold his hair.

The temple grounds also hold the oldest Iron Pagodas in China, dating from 963 (West) and 967 (East). At one time they were gilded, but this has long since peeled off.

Please see my travelogue for more pictures of the temple.

"Life in Guangzhou"

Guangzhou is a very big, busy and sometime very polluted city.. Things are changing, plants and parks are expanding where shanty towns of tents and tempory buildings were... sometimes overnight

Big roadways are opening up... the traffic lights sometimes work.. be careful crossing roads...

People are really excellent.. always kind and freindly... wanting to do their best to please and help...

Plenty of bars and clubs to visit... beware of the hill bar(across the road from the garden hotel) it is the last pub open in town and it stays open till well after breakfast.. Nice chicken hehe in more ways than one...

The catwalk bar under the china hotel... a bit expensive for drinking but say hello to fion there and have a good time listening to singaporian bands that fly through from time to time

Hollywood bar is nice... plenty of locals to drink with and it has a great disco.. and everyone is more than happy to practice their english!

Cool computer markets and electronics districts... want a game or program... I'm sure they will have a copy... plus DVD's are really cheap!

Guangzhou... A excellent place and not far away on the train from Hong Kong
