trains from HK to Guanzghuo/ Chengdu/ Kunming

by soundchaseruk

are there any train timetables and costs for trains to / from these locations ?

looking to travel from HK and stay in Guanzghuo for a night but travel overnight elsewhere.

Is there also a Kowloon express to Guangzhuo ?

I am trying to plan my travel for this year, but dont have much time. Willing to travel overnight on a sleeper if necessary to save time.

hi...

i took train GZ to KunMing once... take soft sleeper as it's 1600 km ride and takes more than 24 hrs. Otherwise pleasant ride. But take lower bed - upper is too close too speakers and they begin with 'music' very early.

There's at least one departure daily. don't know the price. i just went there and bought it at the station...
GZ main station is such a chaotic place.... really interesting, though! and very crowded.

Note that the correct spelling is "Guangzhou". :) Not "Guanzghuo" or "Guangzhuo".
From Hong Kong there're only trains to Guangzhou, but not trains to Chengdu or Kunming. You'll have to go to Shenzhen or Guangzhou for trains to those 2 cities, but they're hardly just an overnight ride away! Shenzhen -- Chengdu is 36h40min, and the fastest train for Guangzhou -- Kunming takes 25h12min.
Yes, there're trains for Hong Kong -- Guangzhou (departing from Hung Hom station in Kowloon) at 0725, 0818, 0924, 1042, 1128, 1214, 1310, 1447, 1635, 1750, 1835 and 1924.
If you want to go somewhere for sightseeing but within an overnight train ride from Guangzhou, then the best bet is probably Yangshuo. The nearest train station is Guilin. Look on http://www.yangers.com for more good information.

hi,

One thing, please do not plan to take train from Guangzhou during late January or whole February. because millions of civilian workers travel home by train for Chinese New Year then back to work again during the days.It is not easy to get one ticket for themselves though.

It is really hard to find train timetables in English version.Sorry. Sleeper ticket costs about 25-50USD.

thank you again for your very precise and accurate help. I am sorry I keep spelling places wrong. !!

I think if I can I will stop over in China for a 2 day visit as I will not have much time. It has so much more character than in HK

I am aware of this as I was when I travelled in October 2007; I purposely missed the national holiday for exactly the same reason.

Many thanks

I went with hard sleeper (upper bunk, no less) for Xiamen -- Kunming which's even longer than Guangzhou -- Kunming. No issues at all.

Buy a motorcycle

by l_joo

Buy a motorcycle is in fact a good idea because the local made 125cc bikes cost RMB5500 (US$700.00) only, you can buy one and travel the entire China, and after that you sell it off at half price. The bike I saw is good enough for you to travel without problem for at least 6 months.

* Guangzhou is going to ban motorcycles (in the city centre) in 2 years time, told by taxi drivers.

Peasant Movement Institute.

by Guantanamera

The Peasant Movement Institute, known as "Nongmin Yundong Jiangxisuo" in Chinese, was an obscure Confucian temple up until the time of the 1920's when it was converted into a communist training institute by Mao Zedong and other early luminaries of the Chinese Communist Party... The building seen in the photo here was the main lecture hall...
