Tianhe district

by toaster808

Does anyone know if the Tianhe district in Guangzhou is a good area for visitors - shopping, dining, nightlife, etc? I plan to book a hotel there b/c I believe a Citibank branch is located there. I've read posting about how alot of the local banks don't accept other issuer's atm cards.

Thanks.

What logo(s) does your card have on the back? You should be fine finding ATMs in Tianhe or other districts in Guangzhou that'd work for your card! Basing your hotel choice on the sole factor of a bank's location sounds slightly weird to me, no offence intended.
Tianhe district is ok, but I usually recommend staying around Beijing Lu/Haizhu/Square/Shamian Island/Shang Xia Jiu area, within comfortable walking distance of a metro stop. Drop me a VTMail with more details (eg budget and dates of stay) if you need hotel recommendations.

TienHE is the most central location in GZ with tons of malls, restaurants and subway, buses, etc. It's nice too.

larger banks like Bank of China and China Construction Bank in Guangzhou will accept foreign ATM cards, even have English menu.
Careful of pickpockets at bus stops in Tianhe area.

Old Customs House

A nice walk to take is that along the Pearl River on its northern bank along Yanjiang Xilu from Shamian Island to Haizhu Bridge. You'll pass by a few colonial buildings that date from the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries including the Old Customs House.

Floods in Guangzhou 2005

by Dorphineprincess

"Shamian Island ..."

This is one of the swimming pools in the famous five star White Swan Hotel on the tiny Shamian island.
It was the first flood in many many years. The water came up every day after noon and has been like this for a while in the 2005 raining season.

"Kids playing in the water.."

"People making their way back to work.."

"Hello, Guests. No pool anymore.."
