Have a granite etching done at...
by kimberbakos
Have a granite etching done at one of the shops. All of the stores have people who do them. They can take any photo and etch it onto a piece of granite. They are amazing. It looks just like a black and white photo that will last forever. The prices range from about $25-$50 US dollars, depending on the size and the number of people in the photo. My best memory is one that can never be replicated or experienced by other travellers. It was being on a tour bus, going from the WS to Hard Rock Cafe and having a bus full of 50 people sing 'Happy Birthday' to my daughter on her first birthday. Then our guide and a few of us who know a little Chinese sang it to her in Chinese. What a perfect example of how she will forever be a part of two countries and cultures.
Buses

Buses here are not the best choice. The traffic here is brutal at most times and buses are always clammed. Also be carefull for pick pocketers on the buses. The bus stations have no english on them and either do the buses. It is a little hard to get around at first if you are by your self, but people will always help
Chen Clan Academy
by Willettsworld
The Chen Clan Academy was located outside the west gate of the city and built between 1888 and 1894. Contributed by the Chen families in seventy-two counties of Guangdong Province, the academy served as the hall for ancestor worship as well as temporary residence for examination or litigation. Covering a total area of 15,000 square metres, the academy is a symmetrical complex comprising 19 single buildings in a square form interspaced by courtyards and connected by covered verandas. The architectural decorations such as the wood carvings, brick carvings, stone carvings, ceramic sculptures, iron castings and paintings are amazingly detailed and elaborate in their design. The figures on the roof ridges adopt themes from mythology and classical literature. The academy holds the Guangdong Museum of Folk Art which displays cultural relics and works of folk art from around the province. More photos of the buildings can be found in my travelogues.
Open: 8.30am-5.30pm daily. Admission: RMB10.
