Halal Food in Guangzhou
by en_one
Hello all VTs,
Kind of wondering where can I find halal food in this city. Appreciate to hear some info from anyone of you. Thank you.

Salaam alaikum
I can tell you that all seafood is halal regardless of who it is from. Fish and other sea life are caught in nets and usually drown and die before they are brought on board. There usually is no slaughtering involved. Thus, scholars such as Yusuf al Qaradawi and others do not make the sea food prepared by nonMuslims haram unless it is proven specifically.
This is the significance of Quranic verses translated:
5:99 "The game of the sea is permitted to you and so is its food, a provision for you and for travellers at sea..."
and 16:14 "And it is He Who has subjected the sea in order that you may eat fresh meat from it..."
That said, to find a zabiha or halal restaurant, I encourage you to ask a travel guide or local for the Mandarin (or local Chinese) words for Halal so you can find it yourself. Otherwise, its a hard way to search the city.
You can also eat the vegetarian meals.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou
Guan Yin.
by Guantanamera
This humonguous statue of Guan Yin was built in the 1990's when Xiqiao was first officially transformed into a tourist zone, but the legend of Guan Yin is a very ancient one... Actually, Guan Yin is really the Chinese version of the Indian bodhisattva Avalokitesvara... According to the Lotus Sutra, this being can assume any form required in order to fulfill the mission of relieving suffering so it can be either male or female. In China, Guan Yin is usually portrayed as a woman, just as she appears in the famous Chinese classic saga "Journey to the West".
Leisure stroll on Shamian Island
by francischris
This is a very nice walk on the island .It is not very large with an area of 44 acres. This used to be the enclave of the foreigners during the Ching Dynasty with consulates, trade offices and banks .The main buildings have plaques stating the year it was constructed and it's origin.I notice most Buildings were French,British and Americans origins with Russians ,Thailand,India ,japan forming the minority. There are two churches,a Catholic Church(Our lady of Lourdes) and a protestant Church. The broad avenues are lined with old trees, some more than 180 years old making strolling a pleasure. The majestic 5 star hotel ,White Swan Hotel is located on the island.
There are street cafes, small hotels, youth hostel, restaurants and gift shops operating from the preserved buildings.

"Amazing Transform to First Class City - Guangzhou"
I was in Guangzhou in 2001. It was not a clean and easy city for self-travellers. But today, Guangzhou becomes so easy for self-travellers because the public transportations like buses, and metro are well planned. It is easy for budget travellers.
