Careful buying electronics in GZ. There is a famous area called the Electronics Market, it's on most English & Chinese maps you can buy in the area. You can get to it from the subway by exiting Ganding off Line 3. Consult a map first. Best place to buy an English map of GZ is at the GZ Bookstore. If you're looking for some stereotypical, not superb quality gifts- pens/watches and so on, you should go to Beijing Lu. Taxi drivers will know where to go. Careful for pick-pocketing in that area because it can get really crowded at times. Also many guys will approach you with a paper in their hand telling you they have "copy watches" or "copy purses" and they want you to follow them to their little shop up a narrow staircase. It looks creepy but they are ok, we've done it many times. Again, if authenticity in your fake stuff you buy is important, then don't go to Beijing lu. You're better off going to Shenzhen. Back to computers and electronics, if you want the real quality then you can try the local department stores like TeeMall (subway line 3, Tiyu xilu, level 4 I think). It won't be super cheap but it will be good quality. One caution- make sure you buy something with the right power supply otherwise you'll need a bunch of converters and transformers if you're not moving to China. Good luck.

Thanks. The information seems to be really helpful.

My experience (in Shanghai and Hangzhou) was that most name brand computers and
other consumer electronics were priced similarly to good discount deals at home in USA. Some low end items are available on the cheap... but as was already pointed out you may need adaptors and probably won't get documentation in any language other than Chinese.

I don't mean to rain on the parade, but that's been my experience for several years.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel.

by Guantanamera

Displayed here is the French Catholic "Our Lady of Lourdes" Chapel, which has undergone restoration and stands resolutely on Shamian Diajie, on the former French side of Shamian Island... A vestige of French religious imperialism, the church is a reminder simultaneously sinistre et sympathique, de la guerre sanguinaire, unleashed by the greedy opium trading profiteers of the Dixneuvieme...

Colorful Metro

by simcard

Metro in Guangzhou is the newest and nicest compared to other cities' . I love its colorful design. You would notice each station has its own theme color. It is awesome. And later built Line 2 Metro is even nicer and safer. As you can see in the picture, there's glass door on the platform. It happened before that people followed suicide by jumping off from the platform. Such glass door will prevent tragedy like that to happen again. Cool idea!

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees.

by Guantanamera

Another Guangzhou temple associated with Chan master Hui Neng, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees does not actually have any banyan trees at all. They existed at one time, about 1000 years ago, at which time they were memorialized in a famous poem. But this is an active Buddhist temple and you can come to admire the 9 story Flower Pagoda (or Hua Ta), the tallest pagoda in Guangzhou.
