Guangzhou in August
by tracyskf
Hi what is the weather like towards end of August - what should I pack?
Where is good for shopping for clothes and what can I find?
What are the not to missed attractions in Guangzhou?
Is there any info on cruise available?

Was in this area of China some weeks ago and it's terribly hot over there at the moment! :)

Look on http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/59287.html for historical weather data for Guangzhou.
Don't miss Chen Jia Ci, Shamian island as well as the great Cantonese food.

HI! Tracie:
Should be hot & muggy now.
Shopping? "Shang Xia Jiu Road" or Upper and Lower Ninth Road are where you should be.....and there are flea market pockets here and there...
GZ is actually a little short on attractions in my personal opinion. Jacelyn has already mentioned a few (Sha Mian Dao with its colonial buildings is beautiful) - I'll throw in the Sun Yat Sen Memorial as well, provided you're into history....

No need to pack anything, just buy as you go, beware of pickpockets, weather not so great, hot and humid and rain and previous posting said.
There are many cruises along the Pearl River, try a dinner cruise in the evening, very nice. There is a huge zoo/circus outside of Guangzhou (Punyu) worth checking out, white tigers and all kinds of exotic animals.
Shopping - Beijing Road lots of bargins, hate to say again but do watch your belongings.
Enjoy

Thanks xuessium
I also read somewhere there is a Temple of Six Banyan Trees - worth going? What is there is the Sun Yat Sen thingy?

HI! Tracie:
Yeah I heard about the temple but I gave it a miss.
As for the Sun Yat Sen Memorial, well you get to read the stories of his lifetime, go through galleries of pictures and perhaps take some shots with a statue of the great man and of the garden outside. Not sure if that sounds interesting for you....

Hi, Tracie!
Shamien "Island" is now connected (look for the nearest landmark - the White Swan Hotel)
Chen Jia Ci is also called Chen Family Temple/Chen Clan Academy.
Shang Xia Jiu Lu is near to Changzhou Lu

Look on http://www.gzmtr.com/en/ckfw/dtxlt/ for a route map of Guangzhou metro. Chen Jia Ci aka Chen Clan Academy is at the metro stop of the same name, on line 1 (in yellow).
Travel Tips for Guangzhou
Guangdong Museum of Art Exhibitions
by Guantanamera
In addition to their permanent collection, the Guangdong Museum of Art also offers temporary exhibitions as well... When I was there, the museum had an excellent show of large scale photography by esteemed German filmmaker Wim Wenders, spanning at least three different decades from Wenders' career... This particular piece in the image shown here is from Wenders' time in the United States and depicts a room inside an old American hotel that had been closed down for many years but left untouched, including all the empty furniture and the old-fashioned red Coca-Cola machine and landscape painting at center...
Six Banyan Pagoda (Liu Rong Ta)
by Confucius
Guangzhou is more famous for food than sightseeing but if you are a pagoda fan then you need to make a pilgrimage to this temple.
The 10 yuan ticket is an extra charge if you wish to climb the stairs to the top. (Regular admission is 1 yuan.)
It is not easy to take pictures of this pagoda, but I'll include my usual "looking up" photos in a travelogue below.
Qinxin Hot Spring - Guangzhou

"Revealing China..."
Feb 17 2003, I am all excited about this china trip but at the same time worrried. Why? Because its the day when Straits Times had a full page of report saying Guangzhou is the place where SARS originated. I was actually thinking if I should take the risk and go..? I made the decision to go ahead , not only because I need to present the company's strategic plan for my division but also I was thinking that ...life is about taking risk right ? So long as we take calculated risk I am sure things will be ok... furher more we are going to be in the resort for the full 5 days... and not going anywhere crowded...
Glad I went ahead with the trip and had lots of fun with my HK, Beijing , Sg and Malaysia colleagues.
