2 days in Guangzhou

by mundo61

We will be in Guangzhou in the middle of October, as it is our first trip there we would like some tips on what is a good hotel in the centre of the city or near the tourist area, also we hear a lot about the markets, which are the best ones and are they open weekends?

Hotel rate at city center is at most expensive at middle of October as Guangzhou Fair is held at that time. It cold be as high as 5 fold the normal rate.

What is your definition of "good"? How many of you are there and what's your expected price range per head?
What kind of markets are you looking for? What kind of items are you shopping for?
Yes, everything is open on weekends.

Yep, hotels might be very expensive during the fair, but then they will be on the standard 'western' price now :) For example, both Holiday Inn in Guangzhou are in good location for business and shopping, I used one of them, I was just checking on-line for double room which is just about 100 euro a night.
Shops and markets seems to me open 7 days a week from sunrise till late at night.

Maybe it is "Chinese Communist" customs.... ;-)

bojomacaraig, the more specific the OP is, the better we can answer. Some adjectives are subjective and not everyone will have the same idea. Better to clarify first rather than presume.
Gili_S, I'm neither of Chinese nationality nor am I Communist. If that was meant to be a joke, that's in poor taste and not funny at all.

Guagnxiao Temple : One of the...

by ErnieGal

Guagnxiao Temple : One of the four famous temples in Guangdong Province, it has a history of 1,500 years. The temple enjoys a very important position in the Buddhist history in China. Many famous monks from home and abroad have come to preach here since the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). In the temple, there are the Mahavira Hall, Sleeping Buddha statue, bodhi trees and East and West Iron Pagodas.

Long distance buses/coach

by l_joo

Long distance buses/coaches are also too easy, you just take a taxi to Tian-He Bus station, everything destinations is there, big direction board, 50+ ticket counters, etc.

I bought ticket from Guangzhou to Fengshun, cost me RMB160 each, 6 hours, big nice clean A/C bus.

Temple of Bright Filial Piety - Pagodas

by Willettsworld

The two iron pagodas on either side of the main temple are worth inspecting closely, as they are thought to be the oldest of their kind in China. The Eastern Iron Pagoda (Dongtie Ta) dates from 967 and is decorated with over 900 niches with statuettes of Buddha. The Western Iron Pagoda (Xitie Ta), dating from 963, only retains three storeys.
