Looking for some English-speaking company when in Guangzhou

by sarina.h

Hi!
I'll be travelling with my mum to Guangzhou and perhaps other various places in Guangdong from Dec 23rd - Feb. Most likely will be visiting relatives as usual.

BUT i'm hoping to find any other international travellers who can speak english fluently (I'm from Sydney) who'll also be around to hang out. I actually speak very little cantonese, so I'll probably go insane speaking only to myself in english haha.

I personally would love to explore more natural places (mountains, national parks, etc).

You will find lots of young people who will be happy to practice their English with you. I take it your mum speaks Cantonese so she could ask the people she is talking to whether they have children who want to learn more English. There are also quite a few expats in the Pearl River Delta especially in Guangzhou, Dongguan and Shenzhen. If you want to find the nighspots etc that they frequent then look on www.deltabridges.com

When we were in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhongshan 10 years ago as a missions group and then a year later travelling around on my own there were plenty of people who spoke or wanted to practice their english
so from your dates you are already there in China - I hope you took a Lonely planet guide book with you for ideas where to go - theres a park in Guangzhou in remembrance of Sun Yatsen which Im sure you will have been taken to by your relatives already but outside of the city is Cuiheng where he was born which is a popular place to visit.
But here in the Travel guides are travel pages with tips and pics of places to see recommended or not recommended by VTers - that would give you uptodate info on getting around and places to visit - it would of course be worth a visit to Hong Kong and even to Macau if you could - you can go to HK by train but there is also the nice alternative of going by boat - Shenzhen was always just a new big city - special economic zone for lucky Chinese - but the tourist attraction of locations around China in miniature looks okay

wish I was back there again!

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Shipping personal things home

by jackiesg

If you are considering shipping your purchase in GZ out to your e.g home country, here's what I know.

One of the option is to mail them out through their China Post, by Air or by Sea.

Not sure the Air freight rates but things involved in Sea Freight through China Post are:

1) You need to buy their specific boxes for the packing. Comes in small and large sizes. Large size is $11 RMB per box.
2) You must pack in front of the Post Office staff, under their camera. If you have packed nicely and sealed your box at home, they will have to open the box up to examine the contents.
3) A list of "not approved" items that you cannot post is being listed in the Post Office. Generally involves any fragile, breakable materials, chemicals etc. Of course, no pets! :D
4) Shipping cost charged by weight. Rates differs depending on which country you're shipping to.
5) There is a maximum number of boxes you can ship each day.

That's all I know. Hope it helps!

Guangzhou - Hong Kong

by Emile72

The distance from Hong Kong to Guangzhou is 174 Kms. Busses and trains run daily between the two cities. There are also high-speed ferries which run regularly.

Everyday there are 8 Direct UHST from Guangzhou to Kowloon in Hong Kong (2 hours ).

There are two train stations in Guangzhou; the old one in the center of town and a newer one to the east of the city. You should go to the newer one when going to Hong Kong. Tickets can be bought inside the station itself. The station is very new, modern and clean. Everything is very straightforward.

Check my Hong Kong site how to get back to Guangzhou.

Shopping - Guangzhou Backstreets

by Mikebb

Our guide took us for a walk through the backstreets, small stalls next to buildings offering all sorts of live animals and reptiles for the evening meal.

The local dentist was a shock, and there was no way I would venture in if I had toothache.
