Awful and Overprice!!
My friend and I just checked into this hotel. The rooms we received are terrible with stained carpets and terrible odour. My friend's room smells like urine and my room smells like body odour. These are old rooms too, with old furnishings. I paid $160USD per night for these rooms on Agoda, and I cannot believe how terrible they are! All the restaurants in this hotel are extremely expensive which I wouldn't mind except the rooms are terrible!
They said they would 'upgrade' us to new rooms for $40. But then we will be paying $200 for what will probably be mediocre rooms at best. Please, for your own sake, avoid this clip joint at all costs!!
Unique Quality: Smelly rooms, very high prices

Good Hotel For The Price
The Garden Hotel is a good choice depending on the price you get. Rates for standard rooms during the non-Canton fair season should be about 500-800 RMB per night with breakfast. The lobby is nice, and there are many amenities, including a squash court, hair salon, gym, etc. The security is very good, but this could be because of visiting dignitaries. Security was pretty heavy when the Prime Minister of Thailand visited a few weeks ago. The area around the Garden Hotel isn't very good, but it puts you at the old heart of Guangzhou. If you have trouble with taxis or using the Guangzhou subway, this isn't really a good hotel for you. A hotel in Tianhe probably is much better. As one of the first 5 star hotels in Guangzhou, the Garden Hotel is similar to the White Swan Hotel, and Marriott China Hotel in age. Many new hotels outclass the Garden Hotel however, such as the Ritz Carlton Guangzhou or Shangri-La Guangzhou. The Shangri-La Guangzhou's location is inconvenient except during the Canton Fair however. The restaurants are pretty expensive, and so is the business centre too. There are about 4 restaurant/cafés in the Garden Hotel, which includes the buffet at the top, the small Italian restaurant, the Chinese restaurant, and the café in the lobby with a bakery. The buffet at the revolving top is great, but pretty pricy (~300 RMB at least), but includes grilled lobster, and other expensive food. The Italian restaurant has a small buffet going on for about 120 RMB now, which is quite expensive with the 10% service charge and small selection. The Chinese restaurant is the largest ripoff in the whole hotel, a can of Coca Cola alone costs 25 RMB, and something like roast duck rice costs 50 RMB. The café near the lobby and elevators is very good, and includes a bakery. The bakery items aren't expensive, and it has a decent view.
Unique Quality: Many amenities. Good rotating buffet restaurant.

Guangzhou Garden Hotel
This is the first hotel that I stayed in China. A 5 Star hotel conveniently located downtown in Huangshi Dong Lu (Central Huangshi Road).
Impressive lobby with a giant decorative wall and a gushing waterfall in the coffee lobby. Besides the hotel room, there is an adjoining service apartment for long term guests maintained by the hotel. Have stayed in one of the service apartments too. On weekends, the house night club is very crowded and popular.
Besides the spacious lobby, it is easy to walk to the nearby shops, restaurants and clubs.

Not too bad
I have stayed at the Garden three times... so it can't be too bad.
It has largest lobby in Asia, or so I'm told. Sady the bedrooms are rather less impressive. Typical of Chinese hotels...
Security is excellent... police are positioned every hundred yards or so in the streets around the hotel and between the car park and the lft lobby, I passed seven security guards. There was another on my floor, by the lift.
Breakfast is not bad, by Chinese standards. Ask for a table outside, by the artificial lake.
The business centre is busy and charges for computer time. But there are two free-to-use PCs in the bar. Great.. you can check your e-mail and drink TsingTao beer at the same time :-)
Food is good but pricey. Their Italian restuarant offers the best value, by far - and is surprisingly authentic.
There are bars and restuarants aplenty in the area. But it is otherwise a pretty dull area.

I thought I went to the wrong room the first day. Went in took a shower and relaxed for about one hour. Put my clothes and things on the bed. Went out to eat and later put the clothes away. When I got back. the room look like no body went in I worried where my clothes went and the Money etc.. The ladies showed they put it all away and cleaned the room. Man what service. I wanted to tip some women. I did not know which one. They said just give down stairs after I leave. The women said it is like they are call girls if I gave them each money.

Garden Hotel
Garden Hotel is one of the most posh 5 star hotels in Guangzhou, alongside China Hotel and White Swan Hotel... But it's much more than a hotel... In addition to the usual facilities, there are excellent restaurants and a shopping arcade, and beyond that, you can find the office for Viet Nam Airlines, the American Consulate Public Affairs Office, as well as a Japanese Consulate... Garden Hotel also seems to be a great nexus for the "massage" business and when passing in front of this hotel, single men will often be approached for so-called massage services... Various kinds of beggars also tend to hang out in this area... Pictured here, a detail from a fantastic and massive traditional Chinese painting displayed in the lobby entranceway to the hotel...
