1 day to see the place!

by dazzelkate

I would love some genuine advice on how to get from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, and what we (family of 2a + 2k) should see and do without doing an expensive tour.Help,please....

You can take a bus direct: there is a bus "station" in Laichikok Road near Prince Edward MTR station (Kowloon). I think it's about HK$60. Takes about 3 hours.

Or you can take the train, from Hung Hom station. Costs about HK$80, takes 1h20.

Guangzhou isn't a particularly touristy city. Most people come for the shopping I think. For things to do, there is a big fun park complex called "Chimelong" (but people say chang long) in Pan Yu somewhere near the end of metro line 4.

I think there are more things to do in Shenzhen, and that's easier to get to from HK - just take the MTR to Lowu and walk across the bridge. You still need a visa though.

I was in Guangzhou 2 weeks ago and I found that the easy way from HK to GZ is by the train from Hong Hom station in HK. I took a bus from Guangzhou to Shenzhen. It took 3 hours due to traffic, accidents blocking the road and a very slow driver. The train has none of these problems.

I did not try this, but I know there are high speed ferries from HK airport to locations in or near Guangzhou. If you have a visa for China, this could be a good and interesting alternative. It also saves having to take the airport train into Kowloon at about 90 HKD. Otherwise, you will have to get a visa in HK then travel to GZ.

As far as tourist things, there are a few old temples in Guangzhou and some parks, but nothing I really wanted to see.

I'd prefer to take the train for Hong Kong -- Guangzhou. Unlike buses, trains don't get stuck in traffic jams!
If you have limited time, I would go for a dimsum meal, Chen Family Academy (Chen Jia Ci), Shamian Island and perhaps some window-shopping on Beijing Lu and Shang Xia Jiu.

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Electricity

by keeweechic

The electricity is 220 volts, 50 cycles. The Plugs are either a two-pin or three-pin flat (5-amp) or round two-pin Continental type. Newer hotels tend to have standard electric razor sockets in bathrooms.

Tipping :is officially forbidden in China, although small tips are sometimes 'expected' by some porters and bell boys in larger hotels and by some taxi drivers where amounts can be rounded off.

Dim Sum @ Guang Zhou Hotel

Its typical chinese restaurant where you can see in the drama series , you will need to queue and they will give you a number and wait for your turn . If the restaurant its very pack you will need to share table with others , I shared it with 3 different people on the same table . Its a very good experience , you wouldn't expect that such early in the morning the restaurant it full of people . The portion is real huge , if you are a small eater then you should not order too many dishes as it will be a waste .

Gradual Deterioration of Sacred Heart Church.

by Guantanamera

As you walk around the church, you will first notice it is almost impossible to enter. The main front entrance is enclosed behind a large wide expanse of iron bars that are locked up, except perhaps on Sundays, presumably... Rounding the exterior, you will notice that the stained glass windows have irregular broken pieces that have not been repaired or restored in any way... It is a marvelous decay, with metaphorical reverberations of meaning...
