Posting parcels from GZ to Sydney Australia

by Erisu

Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere online where I can view the cost of shipping parcels back home (preferrably English sites).
I'm afraid my luggage is over the allowed limit and I'd like to see if it's cheaper to ship some stuff back home. I've googled a bit but not had much luck. Worse comes to worse I'll drag my boyfriend to a few post offices to ask prices but it'll take a heck of a lot of coercing to get him to do that :(

Any help would be much appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, the overseas postal charges are the same anywhere in China (via China Post).

They've got a speed post service that's Y210 to Australia for the first 500g and then Y55 for every additional 500g.

Also there's a mixed airmail-shipping service that's slower but cheaper -- starts at Y134 for the first kg and Y40 odd for every additional kg.

Can't tell you the price for the airmail service as the link appears to be broken. But I s'pose it should be priced somewhere between the two mentioned.

I'm not sure if it's the same in GZ but when I sent parcels from other cities, I had to use the 'official' China Post carton and also they will go through the contents of the package.

Hope that's helpful.

I use a good one, but it's in Chinese: http://www.shenzhenpost.com.cn/yzzf/gj_count.asp
Where are you shipping to? If it isn't urgently needed, shipping by surface (seamail) would be cheapest. If you can't figure out the website, let me know your details and I'll help you check. :)

Travel Tips for Guangzhou

Chinese Table Manners

by jlee008

There are a few that should be noted. The first is mentioned in a tip by itself and that is the process of sanitizing your dishes with hot tea before eating.

Another notable table manner is to avoid touching food with your hands. Food should be manipulated and introduced to the palate with chopsticks. This includes delectables such as steamed buns, which could easily be eaten with fingers.

Typically, there are teacups, rice bowls, and small plates that are included in the place settings for the meal. One should note that the small plates are not used for food. This is the discard plate. One should discard any inedibles onto this plate (i.e. bones, skin, paper, etc.)

It is also good table manners to tap the table next to your teacup when being served tea. This signifies gratitude for filling the tea cup. It was related to me that the origin of this custom was from the days of the emperor when he was served tea. He was not to speak, but this was his gesture of thanks.

I am not sure how widespread these customs are and I recommend that they are followed only in southern China. These customs are very acceptable in Guangzhou.

Guangzhou Orchid Garden

by Willettsworld

The Guangzhou Orchid Garden was rebuilt from a botanical garden in 1957 and covers an area of 3.9 hectares. It is located near the western entrance to the Yuexiu Park and features more than 200 species of orchids. In addition to orchids, there are also over 300 species of other plants. Unfortunately, most of the plants were not in bloom when I visited as it was the end of March. However, the garden is still very pleasant to visit as it has winding paths, arched stone bridges and willow-fringed pools.

Open: 8am-5pm. Admission: RMB8.
