Shenzhen Loft Hostel

by graeme83 about Shenzhen Loft Hostel

I only stayed in this place one night as I had a flight from Shenzen Airport to Kunming in the afternoon and could not find anywhere to stay in Hong Kong. The place is more expensive than most hostels in China, but much cheaper than hostels in HK. The place itself was easy to find with the directions given, but is quite a distance from the border with Hong Kong and the city centre. The place is about a 45min bus ride away from the airport.

There is an arts complex very close to the hostel and some nice parks that are worth a walk around.

A day in Shenzen

by lukluk_wal_marjan

"What should u do...."

The trip to Shenzen was part of the of my HK - Southern China - Macau package.

We travelled by x-press train from HK to Shenzen. The ride was comfortable but nothing can be seen as it was already dark outside when it departs from Kowloon.

My experience in Shenzen is worth the tiredness of having to travel from one hotel to one hotel.

The places may have changed now since my last visit in 2003.

Anyway, followings are the must do itinerary:

- - Visit to Windows of the World
- - Visit to the Cultural Folks Village
- - Enjoying the Ganges Khan Historical Performance

I believed you can check all this out at any of your local travel agent.

Shenzen - Economic liberation

by SLLiew

This used-to-be sleepy farming village across the border of Hong Kong was first open to post-Mao economic growth of China.

It was the pioneer zone for capitalist manufacturing enterprise in a Communist country.

With influx of capital from Hong Kong and later from Taiwan, it soon started the era of China low cost high quality manufacturing.

Now there are wide garden manicured highways and sparkling skyscrappers dominating the township of Shenzhen.

It enjoyed the highest standard of living for awhile before being later surpassed by other cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Tianjin.

With the booming Chinese economy, Shenzhen has many theme parks, beaches, temples, shopping and restaurants and night outlets to keep every tourist, expatriate as well as the locals a place to enjoy themselves and spent more money.

by Unique82

Im looking to go into mainland China for a few days as a trip from Hong Kong, which is the best city between the two, and which is the easiest to get back and forth? thanks

RE: Guangzhou or Shenzen?

Best way to travel from Shenzhen and Hong Kong is by train ,not a long trip less then 1 hour , you will havr to go thought custome and you may need a visa hope this helps we did the trip last June 06

RE: RE: Guangzhou or Shenzen?

Shenzhen basically has everything Guangzhou has and will make an easy trip from Hong Kong. If you are shopping travel away from the border are to Dongmen Road or amost any other area. If you are not shopping consider taking the ferry to Shekou; if not the train is a breeze, you will need a visa.

Shenzen Shopping

by ClaireDobbin

What hours are shops in Shenzen open? Also, are shops in Shenzen open on Sundays? What are the major shopping malls in Shenzen?

Re: Shenzen Shopping

by ellyse

I think malls are generally open roughly 1030--2200. For markets it depends, I'm not sure.
Yes, shops are open on Sundays.

Re: Shenzen Shopping

by polartraveller

shops (except for electronics) open till 10 pm, major shopping area are Dongmen for inexpensive wholesale goods, LoWu commercial complex for knock offs. Hua Qiang Bei has many fashion malls (past the electronic section), if you prefer the real high end stuff do visit CoCo Park, CITIC City Plaza, MixC Shopping Mall

kowloon to shenzen

by rmarguerite

does anyone know how to get to shenzen from kowloon, by mtr?

also how much it costs? and how long it will take to get a visa at the border?

Re: kowloon to shenzen

by walterwu

I just being to Shenzhen from Kowloon (well, mongkok to be preciese).

Simply take a MTR (previously was KCR but have merged) from Kowloon MTR Station to Luo Wu Station and cross the pedestrian bridge across to Shenzhen side (very short air-conditioned bridge).

See my travel page for details.

What passport nationality are you?
In any case, as of a couple of months ago, there's no more visa-on-arrival for any foreigners at that border... or almost any other one, for that matter. The only exceptions are Japanese passport holders.

Re: kowloon to shenzen

by walterwu

Forgot to mention that the tip is on my Shenzhen travelpage.

As for visa, I was certain that none is needed from Singaporean but my other travel companion checked and confirmed at the hotel (Metroparkhotel - Mongkok) and we were off in a breeze.

Re: kowloon to shenzen

Singaporeans will no longer be eligible for the 14-day visa-on-arrival from 1st of July this year. It's not yet known when the regulations will be adjusted again.

Re: kowloon to shenzen

by johnmperry

It is expected that visa regulations will be relaxed in October.

MTRC fare from Hung Hom to Lowu (Luohu) is normally HK$33. I think it goes up by as much as 50% on Sundays and holidays.

Re: kowloon to shenzen

by guo_mei_xin

ellyse - where did you get the news that Singaporeans will no longer be eligible for the 14-day visa-on-arrival from 1st of July? it's because i have a friend who'll be coming to the philippines and we plan to go to china around that time. i tried confirming that news with the chinese consulate and they said there are no news about it, which is weird because they should know it. and i've also had 2 friends told me about that.

Re: kowloon to shenzen

Obvious enough on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site: http://app.mfa.gov.sg/2006/press/view_press_print.asp?post_id=3914

Re: kowloon to shenzen

by guo_mei_xin

ellysa- thanks! now I have proof to show the chinese embassy here. they still won't issue visa to my friend!
