Shenzhen clothing prices

by hewittl

Hi,
We've got a stop-over in HK on the first leg our round the world trip and were considering going into Shenzhen for a day to buy clothes for the trip. Can anyone please give me an idea of prices for some clothing, so that we can work out whether its worth our time and money with visas and travel from HK? We were thinking of buying hiking jackets, pants and shoes as well as tshirts etc (Columbia, North face etc).
Thanks in advance for your help!

A lot depends on your size. Larger sizes are much harder to find and cost more. I am 33" waist and I paid RMB80 for jeans RMB200 for a winter jacket (not a ski-ing one). T-shirts can be as low as RMB10 if you find the right place but are more likely RMB 60. I bought GMT (like Mack) brand boots for RMB150 in Shekou (size US 7).

If you don't want to hop over the border then there are shops and markets in Mongkok (Kowloon side and not too far away) that sell good clothes at affordable prices.

Beware of counterfeits of Columbia and North Face; I have seen them in Xian and Shanghai. Not a big deal to have a counterfeit of a Lauren Polo dress shirt, but if you are doing outdoor expedition genuine Goretex may be important to you.

In one discussion it became clear that the North Face jacket I was looking at was fake, and the merchant knew exactly what the true market price of genuine North Face was... same as in USA!

Best of luck,
Brad

Travel Tips for Shenzhen

Don't make an ass of yourself.

by m1nkey

It is extremely rude in their culture to make a show of yourself. If you have a problem with a meal or hotel, just calmly take your issue to the waiter or manager. I promise you they will do all they can to make it right. They take any dissatisfaction presonal.
And no matter how loud you get if they don't speak english, they don't speak english.

Shenzhen Airport

by mke1963

Shenzhen Airport is architecturally modern, but frustratingly 1970s in the way it handles passengers.
There are two terminals, and it is not clear until you get there which terminal handles which airlines. Check-in is done the old-fashioned way....one desk - one flight.....so you have many empty check-in desks (with bored staff sitting behind them) and long, long, long lines of passengers queueing to check-in. The information screens are confusing because they show the fight number and check-in desk but not the departure time. This is fine if things are going well, but if there are cancellations it makes it *really* difficult to find the departure times of other flights....even harder when the screen (in Terminal A) is rotating at the same time!!!!!
The online flight information is also poorly planned because the Departure listing only shows accurate information for the first page, and for the second page onwards shows only the *Arrival* information. Grrrrrrrrr. Why is it so difficult to get these really simple things sorted out?

As a rule of thumb:
Terminal A: CZ, MU, HU, 3U, FM, MF
Terminal B: CA, ZH, SC, 3E

wish upon a turtle

by zephyrgurl108

the turtle is considered to be a lucky animal in china. it's believed to give good fortune and long life.
at safari park, there is a clear tank with a big turtle in it and lots of money!
so you might wanna try wishing upon a turtle here.
dont throw coins though, i think that would annoy - and hurt the turtle!

From the first time

by vividvivian

if i tell you this is actually my very first time i travel Shenzhen, may be you will not believe that and think i am making joke. it is really true, really the first time i visit this place. when i was young, i always wanted to go but i did not allowed to go alone and now when i want to go, all my friends said they have been there for hundreds of thousands of time that they found it no fun to go to Shenzhen... anyway, my impression of Shenzhen is rather modern than what my friend told me. you can use underground just like the MTR in Hong Kong to travel around to all major towns which easy for visitors. also, many shopping centres around which just like Mongkok in Kowloon. still, have to be careful with your personal belongings and keep your eyes on surroundings. it is always better to know someone in Shenzhen, they know everywhere and can bring you to where you want.
