COMING TO SHENZHEN FOR THE EV25 CONVENTION IN EARLY NOV 2010

by Richard_7

Hi Guys
Me and my wife along with our 16 year old son are coming to HongKong and then onto Shenzhen and want to stay there for 6 to 7 days for the convention. After that we would like to stay in HongKong for a few days before we head to India. Can you guys be kind enough to give us some advice as to fares from hongkong to shenzhen and back.

As we are 3 people which type of accomodation would be better value in regards to accomodation and a rough guide to accomodation prices near the convention centre or nearby, taxi fares in shenzhen.

Any fashion clothes shops as my wife would like to visit them, she is not into cars.

There is the ferry or MRT train to Shenzhen and back. Each way is 37 hkd. The MRT train is the simplelist. Your rooms should be a hundred USD or less from most large chain hotels. Get a room with tw double beds if you do not mind your son being in the same room wth you. It will save you money, unless you get a junior suite. Generally the rooms are large, especially is you pay in around that price. Taxis fares are cheap. when border crossing you may need a visa for each person, look into this! Hong Kong, you will be lucky to find a good room for under 100 USD, but check the web sites to find good deals. Tell your wife and son, with the money you save on these tips you are getting, they can go on a shopping spree as there will be many shops and stores abound. Have fun, besure to get the travelguides available free at the airport. They can give you a idea of what to see in HK. some things are the Peak, walk of fame along the harbor, take a star ferry ride to HK island (cheap) Eat good delicous food. shop till you drop at the harbor mall Cheers Tommy x

It depends where the convention is. If it at the centre in Futian then allow the 37HKD train fare but enter via LokMaChau rather than LuoWu and max 50RMB for a taxi to your hotel and 500-600 for a good hotel room if you have your son in with you.
If you prefer you could come on the ferry that arrives in Shekou which is at the western end of Shenzhen city -it is more expensive around 100HKD I think a ticket. Accomodation there will be similar or even cheaper and as there are a lot of expats in this area it is easy to get first hand advice. Try Gypsy's Restaurant or McCawley Bar or X-Ta_sea bar as there are always plenty of expats there who will give you some up to date advice.
Taxis are relatively cheap. You can go from Shekou in the west to LuoHu for about 90RMB or USD11. The only thing is that you will need the address written in Chinese for you to show the taxi driver as few of them speak English.

Travel Tips for Shenzhen

Interpreting Sale Signs in China

by PlannerShenzhen

In China sale signs are labeled differently than in the west. If on a window or in a store, you see a big number with a chinese character after it, that tells you how much the sale item is as a percent of the original price. It is NOT the percent OFF. If you see an eight, that means it is 80% of full price, or twenty percent off. If you see 6.8, that means it is 32% off.

To your destination in Shenzhen: the China way

by Alain_Smeets

I was lucky that I was with my supplier and he took me with the mini busses that they use in China, a very cheap way of transport if you can find the correct bus to choose from.

When you leave the China immigration, walk towards the shopping centre and lot’s of people will ask you if you need a taxi, just ignore them. Just go up the stairs towards the shopping centre and then down again and you see a line of taxis waiting for customers, smile and pass them. (It was easy for me I just had to follow Alfred.)

You come to a bus park and there you have to find the bus that will bring you to your place. If you have the number, then you know which one to choose, otherwise good luck or you need to speak Chinese to ask for directions.

These are small minibuses and once you are in, it will leave when it’s full or when the departure time is there, what ever comes first. On the road to your destination there are no real bus stops, just yell when you want to get out. Sometimes you have to change busses to get to your final destination, make sure that you have everything detailed before you start this adventure.

I like this way much more then the ferry connection, you are surrounded by Chinese people, but because I don’t speak Chinese it’s for me impossible to communicate with them, so I try to sleep or look outside the window.

And travel light, the luggage goes with you inside the bus and you only have one seat.

Folks Cultural Village

by SLLiew

Another fun theme park where you can see about 24 village authentically build village houses and 56 minority groups of China in just one location.

The Cultural Village is located just next to Splendid China and so it is easy to go to both places.

You can visit each of the village house and meet locals in different costumes and find out more of their culture and customs. It reminds me of the Polynesian Village in Hawaii and the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai, Kuching of Malaysia.

Besides the outdoor show, there is also nightly show which is worth your time.

Shenzhen, China

Shenzhen is a wonderful introduction to mainland China, especially if traveling from Hong Kong. Simply take the KCR to Lo Wu station and walk across the border, customs and immigration formalities withstanding. Visa is required for US citizens. The station is tremendous, probably biggest rail station I have ever seen. The skyline is wonderful with incredible architecture. I especially loved the highways and it seemed like gardens at each underpass. Subway will take you straight to Windows of the World Park.
