Shenzhen visa for Aussies

by jeenny

Can Australian passport holders still get an on-arrival visa for the day at Lo Wu station in Shenzhen? I was able to 3 years ago...

Since the Olympics and all the unrest in that "T" place visa on arrival has been an on and off case, plus the government is planning a huge party for this October 1 so they are extra sticky in issuring entry visas. Having said that my boys who were borned in Canada have no problem getting multiple entry visas last week (In Canada) to visit me here in China in July. Plus I came back last week late becasue of flight delay and had to cross at the LoWu crossing and saw that the vias office was actually nice enough to open the office (at almost midnight) to process a visa for a lone foreign traveller (I think Canadian or Aussie) instead of sending him back to Hongkong.
So try your luck!

Short answer is no. In any case if you the time available always try and get your China visa in your home country. There are various reasons for instance US citizens can get longer validity visas from the Chinese embassy in the States than they could ever get from the Hong Kong visa office.
Before I left at the start of the year we were told that the Government was reviewing the visa process in general to make it easier for certain circumstances -ie spousal visas so they didn't return the visa system to what existed prior to the Olympics. I haven't heard any updates from my friends there.

Travel Tips for Shenzhen

Chinese Tea anyone?

by SLLiew

In China as well as anywhere in a Chinese restaurant, tea drinking is the norm.

If you joined a Shenzhen tour, you will be taken "hostage" to a tea shop. As it is part of the reason why your tour price is cheaper, you may as well enjoy your time there.

Someone will demonstrate how to prepare the different kinds of tea and describe the different types of tea and their benefits. So you can sample the different taste. Be careful, it may be hot.

If you feel obliged to buy the tea and beautiful tea packing, there is no need to buy the most expensive type or buy too much if you are not a regular drinker. The best tea can be spoilt if not properly stored over time.

Walk back to civilization at the Hong Kong border!

by Confucius

After you've kicked the third dirty little beggar kid who was hanging on your leg with a fistful of flowers and brushed by the toothless tout trying to sell you a boxed set of "Sex In The City" DVDs and spent your last RMB on fresh lychees which you are still eating as you go through customs; this is the bridge that brings you back to civilization as you cross over to the refreshing serene clean paradise we all know as the "Fragrant Harbor"; Hong Kong.

time to get medieval

by zephyrgurl108 about the medievalism cafe of westernstyle food

A coffeehouse that also serves main dishes, the medievalism cafe of westernstyle food (the name cracks me up) is not what you think it is. there's nothing medieval about the name, and even the interiors/theme of the resto doesnt follow its title.
but they have lots of drinks and also offer dishes. the place is big with soft, relaxing booths. not so much food here for vegetarians though. i only tried their honey tea and it was way too sweet. but i still liked it.

trip down shenzhen memory lane

by zephyrgurl108

walk through shenzhen's past via the shenzhen musem. on display are trinkets from the past, old pots and jars, old technology. there's also a room full of stuffed land and aquatic animals that's not necessarily from china.
museum is open daily except mondays from 10am to 5pm.
ticket fee is 10rmb.

Shenzhen Airport

by mke1963

My Shenzhen page is really just to provide information about Shenzhen Airport! Look no further if you want restaurant, nightlife or 'must see' tips as I have only used the airport.
My experience at the airport was difficult because I had to change to a different flight and the provision of information is very, very poor, both online and at the airport itself.

This is a pity as the airport is actually quite compact and could be a really good one.
