Also consider whether it's worth the visa costs.

Shenzhen, like most of China, is very safe. I feel safer in the markets in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou than in New York, LA or any other large western city. There are always thieves around who know how to take advantage of anything they see happening, but this is true around the world. You just don't see the level of violence that we expect to see in places like NY or LA. China does not have the gun, drug and gang problems we have in the USA.

I am not sure what it is like getting a visa in HK now. It used to be easy before the Olympics. If you want to see Shenzhen and add a country to your bucket list, just go for it. Maybe you can spend the night too, because there are plenty of very good hotels at prices that are better than Hong Kong.

It's very easy to get a visa in HK. There are agencies all over (especially in Tsim Sha Tsui) that will get you a single entry tourist visa in about 6 hours. Last time I got one it was about $130 US. Also Shenzhen is very safe. I've lived there for over a year and never had any problems. Just be mindful of your belongings and get ready to be stared at.

For a visa agency you might want to try Forever Bright: http://www.fbt-chinavisa.com.hk
My point about the visa is that, the visa cost might negate any possible savings you might get by shopping in Shenzhen instead of Hong Kong.

I lived in Shenzhen for three and a half years and felt quite safe excepting for pickpockets. In fact I can say I felt more uncomfortable in my first couple of months back in melbourne than I did whilst in China as a lot of things had changed and not necessarily for the better.
It is hard to get a round Shenzhen if you don't speak Chinese (either Cantonese or Mandarin is OK) but guides aren't that hard to get. It is probably best to enter via Shekou as it has the highest expat population and there are plenty of places you can get lastest info.

Travel Tips for Shenzhen

Giza Pyramid and Sphinx @ Window of the World

by SLLiew

Reproduction has been a subject of debate when news that Egyptian authorities may take legal actions to impose fees on the replication of Luxor and the temples in Las Vegas.

Of course, this small reproduction of the Pyramid and Sphinx is not close at all to the real thing.

Yet, having a camel to sit on and to take a picture is such a draw to everyone visiting here.

There is also another of Abu Simbel - the four giant statues.

Shenzhen to Zhengzhou via Guangzhou

by psychicchap

My train journey started from shenzhen, its like a 1.30 hours journey to guangzhou.
From guangzhou i had to catch the long distance train to zhengzhou...17 hours long journey...and i was really looking forward to it.

In china, while booking the ticket, the name of the person / sex / age is not required. only the class of travel / date and train no. is required. I booked a ticket in ""Ran wuo" category. Meaning Soft Sleeping Bed. costed me just lesser than a flight ticket. once i reached to my coach, i was asked my ticket and it was noted by the coach attendent. your passport will be needed to verify your identity.

Features of it are a closed door cabin facility for 4 people to sleep. if you are two then you can book 4 persons ticket and try to get some added flavour during your travel by getting some privacy. Train travels through Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Henan...to reach zhengzhou...escapade is fantastic as train travels through lot of long tunnels and along the rivers and mountains....goes through the valleys of mountains to make you feel real ecstatic during the journey.

In your cabin, you can listen to in-train entertainment music and also updates on the cities the train is passing through. May be you can ask local chinese person travelling in the cabin to explain...as the announcements are in chinese language.

You do have a dining coach attached to this Soft sleeper coach. you can go there and relax in the restaurant. as such round the clock there is a small shop in your coach always there to attend your hunger...you can get cold drinks / beer and noodles etc.... To make sure your belongings are safe, its better to carry along a chain and lock which you can fix in your cabin to make sure your luggage doesnt get picked away in your absence !!

Keep tickets and token in your pocket all the time.

I am really looking forward for my next adventure....beijing to Moscow...trans siberian railway journey....

vegetarian buffet

by zephyrgurl108 about dengpin vegetarian foods restaurant

the third vegetarian restaurant i have discovered in shenzhen (thanks to my veggie pal james), dengpin is like an oasis for people practicing ahimsa. it's also a buddhist resto, so onion and garlic are also not allowed. bu they do serve beer and alcohol and dishes with mushroom
go for the veggie buffet!
but i will definitely come back to try ala carte next time. mock ham in gravy like sauce..sorry i dont know what its called...

around the world in one day

by zephyrgurl108

you havent been to shenzhen if u did not visit window of the world theme park.
the park features the world's most famous places...at one point u might get bored with just "seeing" things - replicas of these famous landmarks - but luckily window of the world also has some rides and activities from arrow shooting in the indian village to skiing in the alps...or a rollercoaster ride inside an underground mine...plus there are shows around featuring dances and what have yous of different cultures. would be a lot more of fun if u go with a few friends...as they say, the more, the merrier.

ShenZhen

"Charm of China"

In this bustling city outside of Hong Kong, I find a comforting peace. My third time here, and I feel more comfortable each time. Strange thing about traveling, you start on a budget. Eventually you only enjoy luxury. It seems a bit backwards, me staying in cheap hotels in China, where no one understood English and I walked around completely lost and confused until I figured it out. Now I stay in five star hotels where everyone speaks english and I have no questions.

"Just an everyday scene"

China is filled with buildings, so many are being built and so many new roads are needed. A sudden boom in the automobile industry has caused a tremendous traffic jam, night and day. This seems to be a problem on many city streets, so try to get a hotel room way up high. I was dreaming of trumpets blaring one night.

"Shopping"

Anything you buy in Hong Kong, you can buy here, just cheaper. Everything you can imagine. Except no one speaks english. Well, Money talks here.
