Fisherman with Cormorants
by easterntrekker
The locals have engineered a unique way to fish using commarants . They put a ring of rice around the birds neck so he can catch but not swalloe. ...not to worry he can swallow the little fish so he gets something for his trouble.
Assortment of Cakes
by yipsufen
Guilin is famous for its cakes made from osmanthus, green bean, water chestnut, pomelo and yam. They come in small pieces and are packed in a box. It's rather like a soft kind of biscuit with very soft and loose texture. About RMB6 to RMB9 per box.
Li River Cruise
by geekgrrl
This is a wonderful 2-3 hour cruise down the Li River from south of Guilin (Zhujiang Wharf) to Yangshuo. The river was rather high when we cruised and therefore the cruise was faster than normal. The scenery along the banks of the Li River is magnificent with karsts as far as the eye can see. It was rather overcast, but that adds to the mystic beauty of the landscape.
We were served tea when we arrived onboard and later a decent lunch buffet.
If you are on a tour of any kind to Guilin, it almost always includes this cruise. I am sure that one would have no difficulty booking it individually upon arrival.
More photos of this cruise can be seen in my photo travelogs.
Walk Li River Promenade
by lindyz
Most days we would walk along the river promenade to get us to the centre of Guilin. There was always something to marvel at along the way, it was a nice way to pass the time. Plus, if we walked on the other side of the road on the footpath, we had to walk past the rubbish dump - and OMG it smelt pretty rotten!
It was quite funny cos the same day we put some laundry into the Fubo Hotel, we walked past the river and saw people doing their laundry in it. I said "Well theres our laundry service!!!"
And I swear the 2 pagodas kept moving, cos one day they would be on one side of the river, and the next day, they were on the other side?? Maybe its just because we were always lost, or maybe I should just blame that on the vodka! I thought i was imagining things obviously, but at a later date, when I spoke to my friend Sandi Marsh (another fellow VTer who we actually met up with in Beijing!!!) said the same thing, that she was getting constantly confused and disorientated by the magical moving Pagodas!!!!!!!!!! Hahaha how damn funny is that!
Also on most days they had local markets set up along the river, stuff there was very cheap, we bought lots of jewellery there.
Still under reconstruction
by albaaust
Mausoleums of Jingjiang Princes: The mausoleums are tombs of princes who had been given governorship of Guilin by various Ming Emperors. The site is undergoing renovation and reconstruction and still has some way to go.
There is a small display charting a brief history of Ming emperors. Some of the animal stone statues leading up to the mausoleum itself have been reconstructed. Would miss this one.
Entry cost: 20 Yuan
