Hiring a Driver in Guilin

by sleepy_eyezzz

Hi, each time i go on vacation around asia (ie thailand, vietnam, indonesia, etc) i always hire a driver to bring me around, so that i can visit each site at my leisure, without following a tour guide and rushing from 1 place to another.

I would like to know how feasible is it to hire a driver (and how much would it cost), to bring me around in Guilin. I know some of the attractions within Guilin includes Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill and Reed Flute Cave. Would the driver be able to drive me around to these places (within 1 day) or do i have to take a tour package? Btw, i can speak mandarin, so communication with a local wont be a problem.

Please advice, all help are appreciated! Thanks!

i hope for the time you are there you are including a visit to Yangshuo!! its a must specially compared to guilin - if the weather is not good then bus down to yangshuo and preferably stay the night, find a rickshaw/moped driver with a good haggle to drive you out to moon hill and to fuli and the river - i had a great time in yangshuo much more beautiful than guilin but i did also the mad dash up fubo hill and then the rush to the airport in the limited time i had. i did all my own negotiating, no tours, just lonely planet guide book and my mandarin. and blessed with meeting kind and genuine people along the way.

sorry i was meant to add that if the weather is good then take a boat from guilin down to yangshuo, you can do it all in a day trip easily if you dont want to stay the night in yangshuo and catch a bus back.

Travel Tips for Guilin

Hauling furniture on the bikes

by herzog63

For some reason I was really fascinated with the guys hauling furniture with the pedal operated carts. As I go through my photos I have one for almost every town. They sure work hard for their money.

Fly into Guilin airport! :) ...

Fly into Guilin airport! :) Well, I think it's Guilin airport... it may just be one serving the Guangxi province, as it was some distance from the city. It was pretty small though.
We had our small, sometimes air-conditioned tour bus that got us to most of the places. ;) If we went off on our own, without the group, generally we walked or took a taxi. Taxis are incredibly cheap, although still be cautious of drivers who will try to rip you off.

Elephant Trunk Hill

by SLLiew

This is a famous landmark of Guilin and is just right near the town center. So easy to view and take photo from land if you are tired of the boat trip.

Many of the famous locations of Guilin are named after animals based on the creative imagination of the Chinese people.

Elephant Trunk Hill

by Paolo-Italy

Elephant Trunk Hill is regarded as the symbol of Guilin landscape. Originally named "Li Hill", "Yi Hill" and "Chenshui Hill", the hill has a history of 3.6 hundred million years. Resembling an elephant leisurely sucking water from the river with its long trunk, this hill is famous as Elephant Trunk Hill for hundreds of years.

In this photo i'm with our very very good italian guide (ehm, don't remember her name....!!!!), she was fantastic with her perfect chinese speaking.

Lots of imagination will do wonders

by Sharrie

Cruising on Li River takes about 4 hours in total. The entire route is filled with scenery like this & the Chinese (with a little added imagination, I might add) have came up with all kinds of names describing each mountain some of which resembling horses, tortoise & many other kinds of animals.

Just relax & let your imagination runs wild. You might just be able to come up with your own version!
