solo in Guilin
by canadianwolfinottawa
staying at shangri la hotel ..what is the cost of a taxi to get to the western boat li cruise docking site?
what does a typical taxi cost to get back to Guilin fron the end of cruise point of the Li River cruise ?
can you see comerant evening fishing in Yangshou or should you look for it in Guilin
Re: solo in Guilin

I think you should be able to get a pick up from the hotel if you get the right cruise. Maybe contact the hotel and arrange the cruise through them and get them to arrange pick up from the hotel and maybe the return. The cormorant fishing is not right in Yangshou so mention this to the hotel -being a 5 star they should be able to arrange it for you. It will be more expensive but at least you have leverage over them if anything doesn't go as planned!

If you are going to do it yourself I would allow RMB80 for the taxi (should only be 60) and RMB300 for the return. Insist on using the meeting if you are not familiar with bargaining with Chinese taxi drivers, (which is fun if you know how).
Travel Tips for Guilin
Pomelo - Fruit in Guilin (1)
by myspices
The pomelo - a kind of fruit that has a thick yellowish green or light green skin. Its flesh looks slightly like the grapefruit but it is sweeter (sometimes a tint of sour) and bigger in shape. During the hot weather, pomeloes are a good thirst quencher. They are sold as a whole fruit and not in slices. The pomelo trees can be very high or very low. See more pics on the pomelo trees - one high and one low..
Cormorant Training
by solopes
I saw the “show” of the cormorants fishing for tourists (see my tips on it). I was tempted to believe that the tradition only lives now because of the tourism, but I’m not so sure: along the river lots of cormorants waiting in the rafts make me believe that they keep being useful and that, after the parade of the touristy caravan, life may continue in its traditional way.
UBC Cafe (Shang Dao Kafei) - Looks Nice - But !!
by fujisan about UBC Cafe (Shang Dao Kafei)
This is a Shanghai Chain Coffeehouse. Near the Central Square in Guilin City Centre.
Didn't have any of there food. They do a lot of Western Food.
What is Nice :- It is a really big Comfortable Place.
They always have a Piano Player - who is very talented and adds to the ambience.
We sat in the non - smoking area - which is very small - The Chinese Name translates - as the Pretty Ladies Area. It is really cool - mbecuase we saw some people sitting on Seats that Swing - while drinking Coffee.
Not so Nice :-
Guilin is not great for Coffee - We asked for a Mocha Cafe and Got an Americano (Black Coffee). The cups were very Small too.
It aint really Starbucks! They have buttons that you can press for the Bill or to get one of the many Waitresses to attend to you.
They have tiny TV Screens too - showing Japanese TV comedy clips or Soccer (Football - Europe)
If you want a really nice coffee don't come here - but Coffee is passable - and the experience was interesting. Best of the OK Coffees - was a Mocha - but it was served in a very small Cup :(
Duxiu Feng
by magor65
Duxiu Feng ( the Peak of Lonely Beauty) is in the very middle of the town. To get to the top (152m) you must climb about 300 steps but breathtaking views are a real reward. In the 14th century there used to be a palace at the foot of the hill, but now there are just the remains of it.
Apart from the fantastic views I was also impressed by a couple of other things here and all over Guilin. The place is very neat and tidy. Every hundred metres or so there are dustbins and you won't find any litter elsewhere. Considering the fact that all touristic places are visited by crowds of people it came as a nice surprise.
Guilin College
by easterntrekker
Guilan is known for its wonderful silk scroll works. We had a chance to visit an ancient school and look at sme of the wonderful work done by its students and professors.
We were met by some enthusiastic young students who wanted a chance to practice their English. Dorms are still off limits for boys in the girls residence ...maybe not a bad idea !
