first night in Guilin?

by sunnysarah

We will arriving at Guilin airport at 19:25. I've heard it's nicer to stay in Yangshuo, but is it worth the 1 1/2 hour transfer so late at night?

Any recommendations for a place to spend the first night in Guilin, approx 200RMB? Do most hotels pick up at the airport and what is the average cost?

Thanks so much!

Worthwhile to go to Yangshuo, it's not really late!

Well I was thinking we land at 19:25. By the time we get our bags and whatnot it will probably be 20:30 so we won't arrive to Yangshuo till 22:00 earliest. Will things (cafes ect) still be open?

Agree with Elysee...go down to Yangshuo. It is much nicer. There are buses going from Guilin to Yangshuo all the time. You could even organise a taxi pick up from the airport to your hotel. That way you don't have to worry about catching busses etc.

We stayed at the Paradsea/Paradise which is about a 3/4 star hotel..suited us fine. You'll have to check the current rates on their site but you could also email them in terms of taxi pickup.

Travel Tips for Guilin

New Year's Celebrations

by John195123

Chinese New Years lasts a lot longer than Western New Years... two weeks or so, depending on where you are, and people are still lighting off fireworks as of March 2! It is refreshing to see people allowed to play with fireworks in ways that the west would consider too dangerous. They are allowed to make mistakes and get hurt... they just can't necessarily pay for medical treatment... so, as fireworks arc their urgent way skyward, some actually making above roofline, as vibrations from countless thousands of firecrackers drown out drunken crowds and the constant horns and traffic noise, the clouds below affect the computer generated nature of a colorfully violent lightning storm... it's the New Year in China. Children and adults go slowly deaf to the careless blasts dangerously close to crowds retreating in vain to the advancing excitement. But safety doesn't get in the way of a good time. Deal with injuries if and when they happen, I guess.

Young kids spend the next days lighting off single firecrackers, something sadly unseen in the west -kids allowed to get hurt, to play and use imagination, outside, in the real world... they're smart enough to know what they're dealing with, to know they could get hurt. Refreshing. But that's not the point and there's no time now: the next volley of light has made its way up... much more powerful than we can get at home... display quality, and going off near the airports... wow, what a different world.

It was pretty neat when we were taken to a traditional Chinese hospital, where the doctor took us on a tour and explained some of the different medicines. Truly, it was unique. He then showed us one of his assistants who, by doing Chi Gong, was able to hold a 220 V live wire, lighting this light bulb. (As a EE, I know it all depends on how much current is passing through there, but this was still really neat). To prove it was for real, he had the whole room hold hands, forming a sort of path for the current to move through, and held the bulb on the other end. I definitely felt electricity moving through me!!

Reed Flute Cave

This is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Guilin. The caves are huge and colored lights have been placed inside which make the cave walls more interesting to look at and for photos but it does sort of take away from the natural beauty of the cave.

Shopping on the river LI

by Luchonda

Shopping on a cruise - difficult - but nice local crafts are presented by the people !
Depending on the season, the cruise will starts in Guilin itself or in Yangdi or Daxu (about 1 hr driving from Guilin)

Descending Li river, you may receive a well detailed map, that gives a name to most of the geological formations in the banks, and to some villages hidden in the green of the trees.

Yangti is one of those names, meaning... nothing. We may see one or two roofs, maybe a child by the river, but it's hard to imagine the whole village that stands behind. Unless you travel by road, you will stay restricted to the magnificent performance of nature, that slides by your boat, without a real look of Chinese life.
