Guilin Royal Garden Hotel: Would not recommend it!

I stayed here during a tour of China. The only way I can describe this hotel is a "tired old lady". It was dark and dingy, the rooms were no better. The beds were too low to the ground and hard and one felt it wasn't particularly clean. We had a view overlooking the pool. The pool if that is what one wants to call it was empty of water, there was a swim up bar, tennis courts none of which had obvsiously been used for years. The buffet breakfast wasn't bad, probably the only good thing about this hotel. Definitely not a 5 star.
This hotel is very tired. If you purchase a package tour from the USA or Japan you may be stuck here. Otherwise avoid it. The staff are not well trained and do not speak much English. They have no tourist information except to sell Li River Cruise tickets. There are 3 restaurants; Chinese, Japanese and a very bad western coffee shop. The coffee shop featured "entertainment" by local ethic minorities but it was pretty stupid. Don't drink anything except for beer or soft drinks. We had a river view room that was okay. The only English stations were a santized Chinese version of CNN and a Chinese new station that broadcasts in English (better than CNN). Room had a good view of the river and was a good size but very tired. This is called 5 star but in reality it is a 3 star at best.
