Stalls in the Water
It was hot, very hot, when we went to the Elephant’s Trunk park. We envied the lucky guys that were lazing in the shade, with the feet in the water. That was the true image of serenity and easy comfort.

I read recently on someones China page that when he arrived at the airport the place was swarming with Mossies. Are Mosquitos a problem in this wet/river area, and if so at what time of year? I am coming to China in October.
I remember there were mosquitos in my room from twilight till dawn while accommodating in a guesthouse in Yangshuo (the window-glass was broken ). I had to use mosquito net over my bed . That was about May to June. Just follow precautionary advice avoiding malaria risks including mosquito repellents and medication if necessary.
Don't worry.
Lots of mosquitos in the summer but no problem in October.
We were in Yangshuo in December when I thought it would be really cold and so Mozzies would not be a problem...guess what? In our room big mosquitoes. Take some repellant and ask the hotel to spray each night. Our room had a special mosquito repellant that was put on the power plug but they had not put it on until we asked!!

In keeping with our routines (see General China page) we caught the Shuttle Bus from the airport to the CBD and then Taxi (12 Yuan )to hotel.
Shuttle Bus just outside main entrance and leaving within 5 minutes of arrival.
Painless, no hassling about taxi's ripping you off and travelling like the Chinese do!!
Cost of bus ticket: 20 Yuan.
A cruise on the Li River is an absolute must, when in Guilin!!! It takes about 4-6 hours to go by ship to the pleasant city of Yangshuo. During this trip you'll see the most famous landscape of China!!
This cave is opened to the public in 1995 and is the most commercialised cave in Guilin too.
The best way to enter Crown Cave is by taking the gliders. It's a form of small car whereby you can drive yourself along the railing track. It can carry two passengers and there's a lever in front of you to control the speed of the car. If you like sight-seeing, go slow to enjoy the surrounding scenery. If you like high speed, don't expect it to be as fast as roller coaster. Journey is about 6 minutes. Alternatively , it takes 30 minutes of walk to the cave entrance.
Crown cave is divided into four main parts, which comprised of a very large area. However, thanks to all the available transportation in the cave, you don't have to walk until your legs ache. By boarding the roller-coaster, you will pass by a narrow canyon with beautiful limestone formation. Some are on your sides and some are above on you. Prepare to do some neck stretching. You will then explore the cave by boat. Once seated on the boat, use the torch light provided to explore the underground cave and river. The cave is extremely dark and the only light is emitted through your torch lights. Some parts of the area are so narrow that your boat barely can pass through.
There's a waterfall inside the cave that worth visiting. However, you need to pay additional RMB3 for the entrance. Just can't imagine the water is gushing so rapidly.
Another part of the cave which is very spacious and high and you can see a hole where sunlight is penetrating down. There's two elevators which bring tourist from the bottom to the top of cave. At the top is the exit to Li River. The elevatos are high and transport you up and down to have a bird's eye view of the cave.
Entrance fee to cave: RMB60
Ticket for glider: RMB30 per car and single journey
Tips for taking photo inside cave: Use at least ISO 400 or you can have your photos taken by the professional photographers.
Guilin Central Square is pretty big (nowhere near as big as Tianenman Square), but certainly big by European standards!
There are a few things worth looking out for. At the oppositie end to the big shopping Mall (i.e. the same end as the Guilin Sheraton is situated), there is a huge map of the world embedded in the pavement there.
Then on one of the sides you can find palm trees. There's also the pyramids I mentioned in the previous tip!
Around it you'll find restaurants and fast food shops. My first night there I was tired and hungry, so I just grabbed some fast food and sat on a bench in the middle of this huge square. It was virtually deserted, I think I was the only one there most of the time, but it's always interesting to watch the locals going about their business when they walk through. I got strange looks, so I'm not sure how safe it was to be there, but I certainly didn't feel threatened being there.
