It's not the best time to travel, but it is less crowed and not hot and humid. Gulin has mild winters, but it does get cold if either the river or mountain area. With less tourist there, I am sure you will get the flavor of China, Enjoy Cheers Tommy x

It doesn't (rarely) snow in Guilin, but it gets cold enough to feel like it's going to snow. Problem is that mot buildings aren't built for cold weather. Single paned glass and no heating. So although it's not that cold outside, it's the same temperature inside, making it very uncomfortable. However, with the right choice of hotel, you should be able to avoid this problem.

The Li Jiang rivier is also very low in winter, making the trip to Yangshuo shorter. It will involve more bus time than boat time some years.

But as the other poster said, there are no/few tourists, so you will have the place all to yourself and won't have to pre-book anything.

We found December fine for travelling in Guilin...in fact I remember actually wearing just a t-shirt cycling through the countryside. Great for photographs and not too many tourists.

Dear All,
Thanks for the info on the whether.
Since this is my family first trip to guilin, china, would be advisable to join a tour group from home or just be in guilin and make the necessary arrangement via local tours ?
Thanks

Re: Visit Guilin in December

First of all I would make it down to Yangshuo rather than stay in Guilin. You could if you want organise a tour from there. When you say family are your family young, old fit not so fit? need more information on your interests etc before advsing you on tour etc. Go to my pages on Guilin and Yangshuo to see what we did..it may not suit you.

Hi Albaaust,
Thanks for your reply. I will be traveling with 2 teennagers and a child of 9 yrs old. Have viewed pages posted by you and I think it will help in my planning. Thanks again. Any further advise would be much appreciated.

The reason I asked is that we biked through the countryside when we were in Yangshuo..it was a great way to see the countryside but you can see on my Yangshuo page you can also hire little motor buses.

Also suggest that you get in contact with the guide we used (Wendy) who was fabulous!

Guilin is alway beautiful no matter which season. Different seasons have different view. But it is better to visit at late of summer. Because now, water level of Li river(famous river you should know it) is low and the Longji has harvested. Anyway, hope you enjoy your time.

Travel Tips for Guilin

Li River Cruise - Karst landscape

by Willettsworld

So what is a Karst landscape? Well, it's all due to limestone that has been dramatically eroded. The warm wet climate in the southwest of China speeds up the weathering of limestone by acid rainwater and chemicals in rotting plants. Surface streams lose water to cave systems developing in the limestone. Surface drainage is diverted down sink holes to below the water table. Peaks then start to develop from the land left after erosion by the streams. The cave system gets larger as fast-moving subsurface streams bore through the limestone and the water table drops. Much of the limestone has eroded past the caves down to a layer of shale whilst the limestone peaks remain, such as the one's found in the Guilin area.

There are two types of Karst features: Fenglin karst is characterised by peaks that rise near vertically, like trees, 100 to 250 feet (30 to 80m) above the surrounding flat ground. The other type is known as Fengcong karst. Their peaks are more cone-shaped and one hill meets the next across a depression or doline and are clustered together. If you travel down the Li River on a cruise, it starts with Fenglin karst before gradually giving way to the dense Fengcong as you reach Yangshuo.

Chinese Minorities

by Sharrie

Besides Yunnan & Guizhou provinces, Guangxi province claims to have as many minorities, like Yao, Zhuang & Dong. Ethnic culture like cloth spinning, brocade, embroidery & handicrafts of wood & bamboo carving are very rare in the world.

For the ethnic women, it is crucial that they be equipped with the skills for spinning cloth with cotton & ramee. Traditional technique of beating ramee, dipping them in water, extracting the fibers & then strand them for cloth-spinning in their own looms is still practised in many villages.

It makes you wonder

This guy was catching Cray fish and small fish in this sewer water! I wonder if he was selling it to the local restaurants!! Extra flavor it really makes you wonder sometimes. It might be better to not think about it and just enjoy the flavor. haha

Getting started when the fisherman is in position

by easyoar

Once the fisherman has moved his raft out into a sensible fishing position, he will encourage his Cormorant birds to go out on to the river to hunt for fish.

Sometimes they need a little encourangement! In this case, he picked the bird up on his bamboo cane stick, and lowered it into the water. This wasn't done in any way agressively, and the birds seem very friendly with the fishermen, however there is something still to come which I didn't think was too nice, and would probably get the animal rights activists going which we will come to soon!

Fubo Shan - Thousand Men Pot

by Willettsworld

This large pot is said to have been made in the second year of the reign of the Kangxi emperor of the Qing dynasty in 1663 in Foshan in Guangdong province. It weighs 1000kg, is 1.5 metres in diameter and is 0.8 metres deep. It is said that the pot can cook three hundred "jins" of rice to offer as food for 1,000 men, hence its name.
