Taking a train from Guilin to Guangzhou
by pchan88ca
I am planning to stay three days at Guilin and then take a train (12 hrs) to Guangzhou.
I need advice of how to advance book 5 train tickets (soft beds type) from Guilin to Guangzhou. I heard that the soft beds are sold out very quick.
Can someone also let me know of any city lounge that I can take shower or food before departing for the 9pm night train?
Thanks.

I might be able to help you with pre-booking the train tickets. When are you travelling?
If you want a shower before you go on the train, best would be to get a hotel near the train station and ask for the hourly or "short rest" rate, usually 3-5 hours.
VTMail me if necessary.

At the time I got a big kick out of the Pearl Cream billboard as was being advertised heavily in the US and just hearing that lady metioning being younger from using "Pearl Cream"! There billboards of all kinds usually over a business.
Long Sheng Rice Terrace

This is the place that I would love to see, but did not have time.
See photos in this webpage for some 'flavor':

In 1998, one had to take a 3-4 hour train to reach there from Guilin. There should be more options and easier way to get there nowadays.
Elephant Trunk Hill
by yipsufen
This is a place that visitors will not miss when touring Guilin, as it is a symbol of Guilin city. It naturally catches your attention as the mountain resembles an elephant drinking water by the river.
If you have more time to spare here, you can climb up to the "elephant body" and have a bird's eye view of Guilin city and Puxian Pagoda. If you look afar from the park, you can see another mountain with a hole in the middle. This is what some poets called "Double Moon in Li River".
There's many bamboo rafts cruising on the river for you to enjoy the surrounding scenery. However, this business is privately run by the locals and may not have proper safety measures. Avoid cruising on these bamboo rafts when water on the river is rising fast or heavy rain season.
When walking in the park one can see lots of landscaping or sculptures in the form of elephant. At the Love Island, you can feed the pigeons, have your photos taken with monkey god or in minority people costumes (RMB10 for clothes rental only).
It is an enchanting spot to visit in a boat on a moonlit night. Entrance is free after 8pm.
Place you can explore at your leisure

Elephant Hill is situated on the western bank of Li River. The hill is said to resemble an elephant sucking water from the river with its long trunk. It is supposed to be the landmark of Guilin landscape, which you can find on travel brochures or books.
As you walk around the hill as you enter if you turn left you will come to Moon over the Water Cave/Tunnel. It is so called because of the water reflection when the moonlight sprinkles over the river, hence the name 'Moon over the Water'.
This hill is very easy to reach. Cross the bridge over the Li River on Minzhu Road.
Banyan Lake
by geekgrrl
This is a beautiful walk that goes around all sides of Banyan Lake and the adjoining Fir Lake. It is beautifully landscaped, and has great bridges. I was truly impressed and wished it had been better weather and that we had longer to explore. We walked to the Ancient South Gate where a group of middle-aged women were performing on a stage there in just their street clothes. They had fans and scarves and did several different dances, but they weren't too organized. We walked to an island in the lake when it started raining a little more. We saw the crystal glass bridge.
