Again, the answer to this is very similar to the one I put for Xian. In Yangshuo the highlight for us was the guide we used. Be prepared if you intend to hire a bike to cycle along some fairly rocky roads. Again visit our page.

I stayed at Magnolia Hotel, which was very good for a Chinese Hotel. Close to the shopping.Go to GOOGLE and type in hotel magnolia trip advisor, and you'll get reviews from people who have stayed there. Don't miss the sound and light show. The name does not in any way do this justice, it is an awesome spectacle. Staged on a lake out of town it has a cast of 500, yes five hundred, and is choreographed by Zhang Yimao the fellow who is director for the opening ceremony of Beijing 2008. Also if you are at the dock before 7.30pm you can go on a boat to see a cormorant fisherman for 20 yuan.No need to book, just turn up. Very interesting.

Sorry, I couldn't remember the name of the Hotel I stayed at 6 weeks later. Went to Yangshuo twice, and saw the sound and light show twice, it was so awesome. It was West Street Hotel. Very nice and central to the shopping area. Go to trip advisor.

Look on http://www.yangers.com for good information about Yangshuo. Alf the webmaster would be able to help you out re guides. He also runs the Li River Retreat (http://wwww.li-river-retreat.com) which's a really nice place to stay, just outside Yangshuo.

Should be "www" not "wwww" in the URL above.
Travel Tips for Guilin
Massage and Foot Reflexology

This is an invigourating experience of mind and soul. After going through the aches and pains of massaging, your body aches will go away. This particular one is at Guishan hotel. The total cost is RMB90 per person for 2 hours

The Largest Shopping Mall
by yipsufen about Niko Niko Do Plaza
In chinese it is called Weixiao Tang, the largest and multi-storey shopping mall in Guilin downtown.
The basement has a supermarket. I would suggest you to buy some local produce here like fermented bean curd, osmanthus cakes, etc. without paying for tourist price. You have to deposit your bag at the automatic lockers here, for free.
At the supermarket there's a underground pass where you can cross over to the opposite side of road. It's so convenient. All local produce with Guilin flavours are sold at this area. There are some VCD, fashion and handphone shops here.
Opening Hours: 9:00am-9:30pm
LIJANG RIVER
by Umea6
Lijang river is the main river in Guilin. A scenary around Guilin is incredible, unique and therefore worth taking a half day cruise on Lijang river. Both sides of the river look like the art gallery of different odd shaped hills and peaks.
Hire a guide
by albaaust
We were only in Guilin for one day and wanted to make the most of our time so we hired a guide and driver for the day through our hotel. This entitled us to see the Solitary Beauty Peak, Yu Gardens, Yao Cable car and the Mausoleums of Jingjiang Princes. We discussed what we wanted to see and cut out the City Tour and the Flute Reed Cave. Cost 120 Yuan not including cost of entry tickets.
On reflection it would have been better for us to have researched Guilin better and maybe organised a car to go northward and perhaps see the Longji Terraces.
Huge underground shopping mall
by easyoar
If you look to the right of this picture, inbetween the flowers and the large building, you will see a smallsh pyramid. I had no idea what this was, or indeed what it's purpose was, so I wandered over to it and found you could go inside.
Once inside, you find a flight of steps, and at the bottom of these is a huge underground market, that I am sure most tourists will miss, as it is actually quite well hidden! I had gone through this square on several occasions before I even realised it was there!
The market itself is quite ramshackle, but it makes for an interesting stroll through and is a great place to do a bit of people watching.
