Nangfang Hotel in Nanning

by treasanichinneide

We plan to travel from Nanning to Hanoi in March and I've read that there's a direct bus departing from outside the Nangfang Hotel at 07:30.We'll be arriving by air late the night before and want to stay at this hotel, but I can't find any more information about it anywhere. Could any local expert help? Thanks.

Are you absolutely sure about the spelling of the hotel name? I think it should be Nanfang Hotel instead.

Hi Ellyse, Thanks for the info: you’re right – the hotel is called Nanfang and I found where it’s located in Nanning. I’ve seen on the forums that you’re very knowledgeable about the whole area – could I ask you a couple of questions that might also interest others coming from China. I estimate the trip from Nanning to Hanoi by bus (including border checks) will take 7-8 hours. Right? Is the route an interesting one? Will we pass through scenic areas or is it an arid motor route? We also thought about coming south from Kunming via Hekou-Lao Cai and with a side trip to Sapa before going on to Hanoi.
(We want to spend two days in Sapa in any case). Is the border-crossing on this route O.K. provided all the visas are in order? Is it a direct bus from Kunming to Lao Cai or would we have to search around for connections? Lots of questions, but we only have ONE week’s holidays after many strenuous months and we don’t want endless hassles with timetables!! Do you know how long the trip from Kunming to Lao Cai takes and if the scenery merits a day rather than night journey?
Sorry for all the questions – I don’t expect you to have all the answers and thanks for your help.

In fact, sorry to disappoint you but I can't answer any of those questions! :( I've never been to Nanning nor Vietnam, and certainly none of those border crossings.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Ellyse. I guess we'll take the shortest route and hope for a smooth and scenic ride. We'll report back for the record.

Jiangnan Bus Station in Nanning

by myspices

If you happened to arrive in Nanning's south bus station called the Jiangnan Bus Station which is away from the city centre, you can board an intercity bus to the town centre which is more convenient and accessible to places of interests. Go across the main road which is opposite this bus station and catch the following buses :-

1) Bus route no. 41 which is a 25mins ride will take you to near the Main Train Station - along Chaoyang road (Fare is 2yuan)
2) Bus route no. 407 which is 20mins ride will take you to town centre's bus station (Fare is 1.20yuan)

Nanning - Capital of Guangxi

by Willettsworld

Nanning is the provincial capital of Guangxi and is located right in the far south of the country, only 160km (100 miles) from the Vietnamese border. With this in mind, it plays an important part as far as trade is concerned as the border trade with Vietnam is flourishing and, therefore, Nanning is one of China's most booming cities with construction happening everywhere. When I arrived on a train from Guilin, I was quite surprised to see the difference with the people of the city as their skin tones and facial features are akin to those over the border in Vietnam. I can't say that there's much to do here but the main attractions include the Guangxi Provincial Museum which exhibits the world's largest collection of bronze drums; and the Qingxiu Scenic Area, located about 7km (4 miles) south-east of the city centre. I only stayed one night here before I took an overnight train to Kunming but the city is a major hub for travellers to get to/from Vietnam.
