Wuzhou
"Another fast changing city"
Wuzhou is located in Guangxi province, very near to the border with Guangdong. It's 5 hours from Guangzhou by luxury bus (Y80), and about the same time and price from there to Yangshuo, to the north.
The attractions are few so it isn't worth more than a day. The "modernization fever" has arrived here too, and you can find a high-tech building (China Telecom) and a new suspension bridge that were not mentioned in my guidebook... because they were finished the same year! (2000)
"The contrast"
But you don't need to go too far from the main avenue and the China Telecom building to appreciate the big contrasts of modern China. These pictures were taken just one or two blocks away.
"A temple (forgot its name!)"
Worth visiting is the temple, behind the park at the top of the hill. The temple itself is nice, and so it is the view of the city from it.
"Street markets"
Maybe the best thing about Wuzhou is the markets. You can spend a long time strolling around and watching. It may be hard to ignore the staring looks, though (you'll be the only foreigner in town, believe me). On the other hand, nobody will care if you take pictures, and if you smile they'll smile back.
"Chinese calligraphy"
Here, a calligrapher: a man whose job is to write signs, letters and congratulation notes.
