Persimmon - Fruit in Yangshuo (2)
by myspices
Persimmon - a fruit that looks like the tomato. When it is unripe, it is greenish yellow and turns into a deep orange colour when it's really ripe. The taste is really sweet and juicy and the flesh is tangy and soft. You can eat the persimmon in a dried version - it's brown and flattened. Taste is equally sweet. You can find the fresh persimmon and the dried ones in the fruit stalls along the West Street and the Pantao Road.
Fresh persimmons - about 3-4yuan per kati (about 3 medium sized persimmons)

Cormorants
by nepalgoods
In Southern China fishing with the help of cormorants is quite popular. In Yangshuo most of the fishermen now show their bird to the tourists, earning some money, when the tourists take their photos.
Since ancient times in China, cormorants have been tamed and trained to catch and bring back fish to their owners. Training starts when the young birds are fully grown and feathered. One is tied by a string to a stake at the water's edge. At a whistle signal it is pushed into the water and tossed a bit of fish. Then, after a different whistle, it is pulled back and rewarded again. As soon as the bird gets the idea, live fish is used. Then it is graduated to a boat or raft and a string tied around its neck so that it cannot swallow the fish it caught.
Hezhou - Gupo National Park
by yipsufen
This is a huge park of forest reserves, waterfall, tea plantation, etc. Entrance ticket is inclusive of buggy rides (for a maximum of 10 person). Most of the attractions are within reach by buggy. The first stop of your ride will bring you to the steps to Xiangu Temple and also the park itself.
The park is full of pine trees and large stones on grass. Along the way to Wine Factory, there's cobble-stoned walkway and some peacocks in captivity.
Raincoat will come in handy here as there is no shelter in case of rain.
Walking & Cycling - The best mode...
by myspices
Within the town of Yangshuo, you can simply walk to venture. There are not much traffic so walking is safe and you get to see more things at your pace. You can move into nooks and corners to check out shops and eateries. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle which can take you to as far as where MoonHill is (about 8km away).
One important thing you must have in hand is : a map and of course your camera!

Minne Mao's Cafe
by John195123 about Minne Mao's Cafe
Pretty location just off a small lake where cormorant fishermen laze about the green waters. The option to sit on the deck outside probably makes for highly contested seating during the warm months. They have internet and a pool table as well. The bridge just beyond the entrance to the deck provides good people-watching. Their food is decent- unless they simply messed up the order, the coffee-chocolate milkshake with icecream had no icecream and wasn't actually a milkshake- more like iced coffee. Banana pancakes are a delicacy in Yangshuo, though they're more like crepes. Their flavor at Minne Mao's is good enough, but I wasn't really impressed. The banana milkshake was good, but not really what the west thinks of as a milkshake either. That's all we ate there, but they have coffee and other real food and the main attraction in my mind is the deck.
