We're a family with a couple of oyung(ish) children looking for some where to stay in or around Yangshou.
We're on a "backpackers" budget. We'd like some where clean, fairly quiet, western toilets would be nice but not essential.
Any suggestion?
Yangshuo is much nicer and less expensvie than Guilin. It's been a while since I last visited but I've read it's changed quite a bit and is now popular also amongst the young chinese crowd as well.
You can book less expensive boat cruises along the karst infested Li-jiang River from Xing-Ping and these tours can even be booked from Yangshuo.
Highly also recommend going up to the Longsheng/Longi terraced rice fields and again, this can be arranged by local Yangshuo travel agencies. No need to prebook from outside the country.

Hi Andrew, I stayed in Moon Resort (a small hotel indeed) in spring and was quite pleased with the helpful staff and the environment; They charged me 80RMB/night. The hotel have western toilet and shower in your room and it's quite clean for China :) Food also was very tasty!

Though carefully carried from beautiful urban development to beautiful rural display, we could have a side view of real rural life.
And it looks as hard as expected. China grows at two different speeds, and there are millions far behind the splendours of the progressive big cities.
I guess you can never be too ready but...
Here when someone gets on in years they buy and store a coffin for them in the back room of their house. For them it brings comfort to know they are ready for me it would be un-nerving to see my last travel arrangement!!
The Bu Di Zhen Kung Fu school in Yangshuo has a fascinating history and is a must do activity if you are visiting for a short time or staying for an extended period. Located down the little alley way off West Street ( down the left side of 'Kiss bar'). The school is run by Master 'Papa' Gao who is now 79 years old and his twin sons George and Peter. The school is a perfect way for westerners to learn traditional chinese kung fu and tai chi - as both George and Peter speak excellent english, having taught martial arts all over the world. The school is open from around 7am - 9am and from 6pm to 7:30 pm daily. Classes cost 50 yuan per lesson with discounts available for monthly and yearly memberships. Comfortable clothing is all you need.
There are frequent buses to and from Yangshuo all day long. In Guilin, you can catch it at train station. In Yangshuo, just walk up to the main highway. The cost is about 5 Yuan each way. The trip takes about 40 minutes. And don't worry... the buses are much nicer than this old relic.
We were thinking to have a snack so we ordered onion ring and steamed dumplings. It was so yummy and the amount wasn't small and we were so full after this. This meal was only less than 30yuan including the local beer 7yuan only!!
