Fresh Lotus Seeds - healthy food
by myspices
Lotus seeds, young and old, are sold along the streets of West Street, Pantao area or along any streets in Yangshuo. The young lotus seeds are packed in little leave cones while the old ones are sold together with the stalk of lotus pod. Eating the lotus seeds is said to be nutritious and good for the complexion. For the young lotus seeds, all you need to do is peel off the outer skin of the seed, split the seed into half and remove the stem that is inside (as this is slightly bitter) and pop it into your mouth. For older ones, which are still inside the pod, you just remove them from the pod, and do likewise. The older ones are crunchier and stronger in taste while the young ones are sweeter and of course, more tender. Can't remember how much they cost but it''s pretty cheap.
Sugar Cane
by albaaust
Another local favourite is sugar cane- you will see lots of vendors selling them. They look like sticks in a carrier(see photo).
To eat them tear off the hard outer skin and bite in the white bit. Suck out the juice and discard the husks.
They cost less than 1 Yuan and actually are less sweet than processed sugar.
Get out of town
by John195123
I don't want this to become a place where you pass more travelers than water buffalo, but for a nice, scenic walk on mostly dirt roads, head for the bridge downriver (the one you can see from town). Don't cross the bridge, but go under it (careful- it gets narrow and there's a bunch of traffic on occasion) and follow the road until you get to a fork. You will have passed two bridges on your left for "Impressions". At the fork, go left. Follow the road to Dutou (Doo tow) or towards Mu (Moo) Shan Village. There are some forks, but the main road is fairly obvious. There is one point where a sign points straight ahead then the road forks. If you take the left fork, you will come to the Li River- it's pretty and not congested with boats and tourists. If you take the right fork, you will continue on to Mu Shan and Dutou. From Dutou you can get a boat across to Fuli (Foo lee). There are a few places to stay along the way, if you want to stay out of town, the Snow Lion hotel and the Li River Farmer's Inn or something like that.
Motorcycles and bikes tend to hug the smoother edges of the road, so you might want to walk in the middle, just be aware of cars and trucks.
It's a beautiful walk through farmland and rice paddies, and the people are friendly and don't try to sell you anything.
Yangshuo to Fuli
by myspices
It looks like a van and the Chinese termed it the "Mien Pau Che" (Bread van). We took this vehicle from Yangshuo bus station direct to Fuli, the Ancient town. The bus will go throught the Dragon Back Hill tunnel. The ride is about 20mins-25mins, making quite a bit of stops along the way. The fare is 2.50yuan per pax one way. The so-called bus is non AC and old looking. The bus will stop you at the main road when it arrived at Fuli. To get back to Yangshuo after you have completed your visit to Fuli, you will just have to cross over to the road to where the bus has stopped you earlier when you arrived.
Good, cheap food
by albaaust about Kelly's Place
This restaurant was recommended by one of the teachers at the local school and was well worth it.
It serves western as well as Chinese food. (Veggie Burgers, burrito, pizza, milkshakes and sichuan food) Another customer who was in the restaurant as us raved about his chicken and nuts meal. We ordered eggplant and another chicken dish which was very good.
The restaurant also offers free internet use. When we went in they were playing 70s western music!
