First Pass Hotel: Fancy hotel at budget price
This hotel has two Chinese names, 天下第一关宾馆 and 锦山宾馆, (tian xia di yi bin guan and jin shan bin guan). It is probably the best place to stay in Shanhaiguan. Don't be scared off when you enter the lobby and see the prices listed at Y500 or more a night. Ask to see the rooms and explain you're a budget traveler and can't afford such high prices. They are more than willing to negotiate. Without much effort (just a friendly talk with the lady in charge) I got a beautiful double room for Y180 a night. The rooms are very clean, with A/C and nice bathrooms. The location is central and staff friendly.

The restaurant provides basic accomodation for people on a budget. Rooms are very basic but less than 100 Yuan.

The first pass hotel: Comfortable accomodation
The first Pass hotel is in the northern part of the walled city, right next to the first Pass (the first gate through the wall). It's a new building but built in the local style - teh rooms are around courtyards.
Rooms are comfortable with all conveniences (TV, phone, heating, kettle and tea making facilities etc).
This hotel used to be called the JingShan hotel, but has recently changed it's name. taxi drivers still know it as the Jingshan hotel
Prices are quoted as being 460Yuan a night for a single. With a bit of bare faced cheek you can getthe price down to 200 (which is what I paid)
