Stained glass window at the Shangri-La by mke1963 There are three key hotels in the city centre, spread along the main pedestrian street, Zhongyang Lu, which runs north (from the river bank) to the south (at Jingwei Lu). At the very northern end, overlooking the river is the 4 star Gloria Inn. Excellent location; seemed deadly quiet in the lobby. Fantastic waterfall sculpture (separate review!). Roughly in the middle of Zhongyang Lu (so a little bit inaccessible because taxis have to drive down the pavement to get to and from the entrance!) is the oldest hotel hotel in town the "Modern Hotel".....or Modern Hel" as the neon sign displays at night! Then at the south end, actually opposite the entrance to Zhingyang Lu, on the other side of Jingwei Lu is the appallingly designed, but fairly good Holiday Inn (seperate review). The excellent Shangri-La is a long way west along the river bank, so a good distance from the old streets and atmosphere. However, the walk through Stalin Park is very enjoyable, even in the depths of winter.
Note that the Shangri-La has some really nice art-deco style stained glass windows (see photo). While it may be a bit much to expect people to travel long distances to see a few stained glass windows (!), if you are in Harbin, try having lunch at the Shangri La. The stained glass windows and wall-mounted mosaics are very attractive. In the case of the art-deco glass, this is very appropriate for Harbin, given its history, and I was impressed that the designers or the managers of the Shangri-La had given sufficient thought to detail to include these little fixtures in their hotel. It's difficult to describe, but it is precisely this kind of attention to detail that makes the difference. Theme: Hotel

Yes. It looks as bad as I said it does. by mke1963 The Harbin Holiday Inn is one of those hotels that you guess is at the very fringes of an international hotel chain; not exactly the flagship of the brand. It is well-located, albeit on the wrong side of the dangerously busy Jingwei Lu from the pedestrianised main street of Zhongyang Lu. It is housed in possibly the ugliest white-tile-and-blue-glass building in the city, but at least by staying here you don’t have to look at it. Overall, the Holiday Inn is not a bad place but it is hot and cramped. Every public area, from the lobby to the lobby bar to the restaurants and Red Lion ‘pub’ feels small and airless. Similarly the rooms, although average in size, have seen better days. The hotel has seen better days, and quite a lot of them, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this particular hotel lose its franchise. It really feels more like a Chinese 4 star hotel than an international 4 star hotel. It is a far cry from the elegance and class of the Holiday Inn in Hohhot. For a few days stay, the Harbin Holiday Inn is a good choice because of its location and it is cheap (if booked over the internet in advance….RMB390 plus tax). It’s not a bad place; it just lacks what one expects from a Holiday Inn hotel. by yuming It is my dream. The famous film "harbin in the dark" shows that lots of history come from here. This hotel is built at 1906 by a foreigner, from that time, all imprtant people: politician, rich people, even spy or famous star came here. there is also a interesting story about it's name: The owenr of the hotel is a Russia at that time, so he named it Мопе1088;н, after the Russia revolution, the owner went to France with his family, when the Japanees invaded in Harbin, he changed the hotel name to French. And now , it is English.

In January 2005, the Chinese press announced that an Ice and Snow Hotel had opened, China's first. Nowhere did anyone feel it necessary to provide the address or any contact information. The foreign press picked the story up, but still no advertising. It is a simply classic, text-book case, of how tourism marketing in China fails. How on earth are people going to book the hotel if no-one knows where it is, the cost, how to get there, etc. It really wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't open next year simply because everyone connected with this venure is disappointed that no-one came when they built it this year. In fact the hotel is at the Taiyang Dao (Sun Island) Snow World park on the north bank of the Songhuajiang river, outside Harbin. We didn't see the hotel while we were there, but noticed mention of it on their website. What little information I have suggests that it is aimed at foreign tourists, yet we are not aware of a single piece of advertising material ANYWHERE providing ANY information. Witless or what?
Other than the obvious, the most startlingly unique qualities are that they expect people to know about this hotel without them doing any marketing, telling anyone about their hotel, and basically expecting bokings to come in by telepathy. This review you are reading now is the sum total of useful information about the Ice Hotel in Harbin, and the only one in the English language that provides a phone number (below). However, as that phone number is for Sun Island, I would place millions of dollars of bets that no-one answering the phone will speak a single word of English, so get a Chinese speaker to phone for you. Even then, don't be surprised if their own staff haven't even heard of the hotel. Yes, things get that bad in China. As an additional warning, if you are contemplating staying at the Ice Hotel. It is not uncommon for hotels to be built inside parks or other 'paid entry' venues in China. The problem comes when you want to get to the hotel (taxi can't get in!), so what do you do then? Do you leave your luggage in a taxi while you find someone who understands what you want? What if no-one has any idea what you are talking about (not uncommon even when speaking in Chinese.....what hotel? There's no hotel here! etc)? Then what about when you want to go out. You may have a long walk to where you can get a taxi or a bus. Are you going to have an irritating argument every, single bloody time you want to get back to your hotel? Think carefully about ever booking a hotel that is inside a park or 'venue' of some kind in China. The hotel management never ever think through the practical issues, leaving guests to struggle with the consequences. Theme: HotelAddress: Somewhere in Taiyang DaoPhone: 0451-88190536-6628Directions: Note that the park is away from Harbin. You will need to make sure you have a taxi on call when you need it. You cannot walk anywhere from Sun Island in winter.

View from the room by SurfaceTravel The rooms and premises were plain 2-star and the en-suite bathrooms were fine, but the service was horrible. There was no English spoken whatsoever, but this was not the problem, and to be expected because, after all, we were in China. But the staff's stupidity was not language related. For example at the restaurant, if you hold up an empty water glass to the waiter an point at it, he should be able to figure out that you want water. No. I didn't know what to do with the laundry, so I took it down to the front counter in the hotel's own laundry bag, with Chinese writing on it. I tried to leave it with them, but it was like they had never seen such a thing in their entire lives. We should have stayed in the Holiday Inn, closer to the centre of town. We stayed at the Holiday Inn (4 stars), which turned out to be a good choice, as everything interesting is within walking distance, and after a long day outside in the cold (up to -30°C during our visit) it feels quite comfortable to return to a nice and warm hotel! Prices were US$ 50 for a double, quite reasonable I think. Theme: HotelDirections: The hotel is centrally located on Jingwei Jie in the Daoli District. Zhaolin Park is within walking distance and even Songhua River and Sun Island can easily be reached by foot.

by PieterB Harbin Friendship Palace Hotel: This hotel was build by the russians. The chineese later added a Chineese roof. As I understood it, the hotel was build for the use of party officials and later for Chinese part ofiicials. The hotel gives a 'Lost Glory' atmosphere: Large luxurious rooms, where window isolation is enforced with scotch tape, nice bathrooms that serve a trickel of warm water between 7.00 to 8.30 in the morning, rest of the day cold water! It was an experience! 90 US$ per person a day including breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It features a large glass covered winter garden hall, where piano concerts are given. Theme: HotelComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Youyi Lu avenue, next to the cable car departure.
