Hotels in Harbin-Rupertlee?

by abluechip2

We are planning to visit Harbin for the Snow and Ice Festival January 2009. Can anyone suggest the most convenient hotel to be able to walk around the city and still have easy access to the sites?

Hi,

I am also travelling there in Jan 09, make sure you are prepared clothing wise, it is going to be a cold one!!

The lungmen Modern plaza is central to most of the sites (Zhaolin Park, Ice & snow world etc)

It costs $42 a night for a double room.

Travel Tips for Harbin

Sun Island Park

by RoseAmano

Called something which sounds like "Taiyang Dao" in Chinese, it is located across Songhua River from Flood Prevention Monument and Stalin Park, and may be accessed by ropeway ride across the river.

Here is a nice open park popular with the locals as a place to relax, and a favoured place for newlyweds to have memorial photographs on nice days. There is a group of Russian Dacha architecture, and a Japanese garden called the "Harbin-Niigata Friendship Garden" reflecting the sister city status. The Squirrel Island is especially popular with children as they can purchase food for the animals. The Chinese lettering of this area struck a funny bone with us as the Chinese rendering of "Squirrels" translates to Japanese conceptually as "Pine Rodents", and the modern Japanese language version does away with the rodential nuance of the character. Not as furry and cute now, eh?

Cultural presentations

While we were walking among the snow sculptures, we heard some drumming, which became louder and louder and suddenly: there they are... a group of Chinese women dressed up in typical dresses marching through the park.

Interesting feeling... surprises are always welcome!

Sun Island (Tai4Yang2Dao3)

by Bernard_SeowInnHeong

I suggest setting off for the Sun Island in the afternoon. See the sculptures in daylight. They should look different when the lights are turned when it is dark.

Sun Island (Tai4Yang2Dao3) is across the main city of Harbin. To get there, you can walk across the Song4Hua1Jiang1, which is frozen during the month of January. The Island is pretty big. There are road signs (in English) on this island.

The snow sculpture exhibit is just a small part of the entire island. Entrance fee to the snow sculpture exhibit is 60yuan per person.

One can also do horse riding, snowmobile inside the exhibition area. All these at a cost of course. A 30-minute horse ride costs about 120Yuan per person.

Centrepiece

Zhongyang Dajie is lined with Russian-style buildings, and in winter with small-scale ice sculptures too. One end of it ends at the Flood Control Monument beside Songhua River.
At night it's lit up and looks very atmospheric.

White North of China

by ahoerner

Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Sheng (province) in the far north of China. It is about 250km from Changchun, where we currently live.

Our first reason for this short weekend trip was the ice & snow festivals, visited by lots of tourists, with displays of impressive and beautiful art works made of snow and ice...

Besides the festival, the city has something of interesting as well. It has strong influence of Russian colonization, and being near to Russia also developed over the time strong bonds to its neighbours.

More to come soon... keep online!
