Centralised, Basic
Decoration simple. Toiletries provision satisfactory. Hot water system efficient. Breakfast spread is acceptable. Location is centralised, nearest walking distance to Zhongyang Dajie (just across the street). Reachable by comfortable stroll to Sophia Church. Do be careful when crossing the wide crossroad. Otherwise, a short taxi ride will get you to Zhaolin Park Ice Festival. However, if you are only after the biggest evshort on time visit the Ice Sculpture opposite Sun Island instead
Overall, I'll rate this hotel as 3star. Lobby & reception area is small and uninviting. Interior decoration dated and worn. Hotel exterior dogged by shabby eateries shops/living quarters.
Our stay experience was also slightly marred by sluggish check in services and poor dealings by frontdesk personnel. Our requested room type was not ready despite confirmation assurance. They even try to convince us to take a pariah room facing a fire escape stairways since it was the only one with king sized bed available at the time. It was stale and crampy. We ended up taking a twin bed room instead.

This is a Holiday Inn?
In the US, we often look at Holiday Inns as mid- to low-end hotels that will suffice for a night's stay. Aside from at least one I know of, the Holiday Inn on Broadway in Louisville, KY, they all seem to fit that description. Here in Harbin's city center, the Holiday Inn is a much nicer high-rise hotel that, could pass for a much nicer hotel, and, judging by the rates, is, in fact, a nicer hotel.
We arrived in Harbin late at night and, passing up another hotel because we didn't have the Chinese to communicate, wandered the 1:30am pedestrian street until we arrived at the Holiday Inn, which we saw from the taxi on the way in.
Since they said they were full except for a suite, we took the suite and enjoyed our night of expense. Whether they were really full I can't say, but it was a nice room: much nicer than we'd usually get. I'll try to get a shot of it when I'm down there next.

Holiday Inn
The Harbin Holiday Inn is one of those hotels that you guess is at the very fringes of an international hotel chain; not exactly the flagship of the brand. It is well-located, albeit on the wrong side of the dangerously busy Jingwei Lu from the pedestrianised main street of Zhongyang Lu. It is housed in possibly the ugliest white-tile-and-blue-glass building in the city, but at least by staying here you don’t have to look at it.
Overall, the Holiday Inn is not a bad place but it is hot and cramped. Every public area, from the lobby to the lobby bar to the restaurants and Red Lion ‘pub’ feels small and airless. Similarly the rooms, although average in size, have seen better days. The hotel has seen better days, and quite a lot of them, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this particular hotel lose its franchise. It really feels more like a Chinese 4 star hotel than an international 4 star hotel. It is a far cry from the elegance and class of the Holiday Inn in Hohhot.
For a few days stay, the Harbin Holiday Inn is a good choice because of its location and it is cheap (if booked over the internet in advance….RMB390 plus tax). It’s not a bad place; it just lacks what one expects from a Holiday Inn hotel.
