Overall, the Holiday Inn is not a bad place but it is hot and cramped. Every public area, from the lobby to the lobby bar to the restaurants and Red Lion ‘pub’ feels small and airless. Similarly the rooms, although average in size, have seen better days. The hotel has seen better days, and quite a lot of them, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this particular hotel lose its franchise. It really feels more like a Chinese 4 star hotel than an international 4 star hotel. It is a far cry from the elegance and class of the Holiday Inn in Hohhot.
For a few days stay, the Harbin Holiday Inn is a good choice because of its location and it is cheap (if booked over the internet in advance….RMB390 plus tax). It’s not a bad place; it just lacks what one expects from a Holiday Inn hotel. In the US, we often look at Holiday Inns as mid- to low-end hotels that will suffice for a night's stay. Aside from at least one I know of, the Holiday Inn on Broadway in Louisville, KY, they all seem to fit that description. Here in Harbin's city center, the Holiday Inn is a much nicer high-rise hotel that, could pass for a much nicer hotel, and, judging by the rates, is, in fact, a nicer hotel.
We arrived in Harbin late at night and, passing up another hotel because we didn't have the Chinese to communicate, wandered the 1:30am pedestrian street until we arrived at the Holiday Inn, which we saw from the taxi on the way in.
Since they said they were full except for a suite, we took the suite and enjoyed our night of expense. Whether they were really full I can't say, but it was a nice room: much nicer than we'd usually get. I'll try to get a shot of it when I'm down there next.
